Hey everyone! I'm going to putting in my housing request soon, and I have a few questions.

I've narrowed down my hall choices to Max P, BJ, and South. I'd prefer to not be too far away from campus. I'm also looking for a pretty social group of people who would be willing to get into IM Sports like innertube waterpolo with me! I'm definitely not a crazy frat boy, but I would like to have the option to party with friends if I'd like to.

So. I love the look of BJ, but will I be able to be social and have a good time, while being able to settle down and relax when I want to? How do Max P and South compare? I know that Max P and South are very social and that's where I'll find the partying, but do I have to be a student there to be able to get into that social life when I want to?

Is South too far away from campus that's it's a hassle traveling back and forth from campus?

I know my thought are kind of all over the place. I'm sorry. Haha
Thanks for any insight and help!!

Can’t speak to BJ. Max is about 3-5 walking minutes closer to the center of campus than South is. Both are really social. Max would be best if you like IM sports. It’s right next to Ratner and its where a lot of the athletes room.

As a first year, 80% of your friends are from your house, so if you like an active social life I’d pick south/max over BJ, but you can always make the effort and just go to the frat parties and build your network from there.

@presque Oh yeah, I know. Haha
But that’s not a deciding factor for me.

On a different note, is it right to say that if I went to BJ, I could easily go out and party and make friends and socialize with people from Max P and other houses, as long as I’m a tad proactive and outgoing?

Just a parent of a 3rd year, but based on observations and info from my S, I can answer a few of your concerns.

South is directly behind BJ, not even a block away. If you are considering BJ, then you should consider South just as strongly. About a 5-8 walk to main quad, 10-12 to Ratner. With ice and snow add a few extra minutes.

House culture is very stong in BJ. While you can definitely socialize elsewhere, it would probably isolate you. BJ is not an un-social dorm, many do drink at parties, but many do not. Social in BJ may mean hanging out playing cards, board games, video games and talking late into the night.

You should consider other factors as well. Do you want a single? BJ has many available for 1st years. South has them, but mostly for upperclassmen. Do you want a bathroom at the end of the hall you share with many, but don’t have to clean yourself? That would be BJ. MaxP has private bathrooms, not sure about South.

Do you want to be close to the gym? MaxP would be better, especially in the winter.

What dining hall would you prefer? South and BJ use Cathey(South), while Max uses Bartlett.

How close to the library do you want to be? Max is closer to 2, while South and BJ are semi-close to one, farther away to others.
