Housing

Now that my son is admitted, even before he makes any decisions I want to start the housing process. Can someone give me advice on the best freshman dorms, co-ed. He probably won’t do a learning community. Thanks.

Most dorms at USC are associated with a learning community. I would say your best luck is to try out one of the quads. South Quad is the most expensive university owned dorms, but it’s also one of the nicest. There is also East Quad, as well as Green Quad, which is LEED certified. Or, you can try Bates West. It’s not as nice, but I works and is relative not as expensive.

is their any reason to applying for housing now versus waiting until February or March when Honors and final scholarships are released? Any negative to waiting when it comes to room selections?

Many students visit forums and select potential roommates whom they feel they would be compatible. They then list their prospective roommate when filling the housing application and the university will place them in their desired room together (if possible). Naturally, this process doesn’t happen until the few weeks before housing applications are due. This seems to work out quite well. The housing priority is determined by your original USC application date, so there is no need to do this early as your priority order is already determined by when you applied to USC. My D spent the weeks leading up to the housing deadline selecting her roommate and didn’t apply for housing until nearly last minute. Since she applied to USC EA, she got the room she wanted and the roommate she wanted.
