Housing

Centrally located, (yes if you are in engineering West is better but it is still closer to most of campus than East)
Close to the HUB.
Lots of dining facilities available - the Pollock commons or McElwain is even closer - right across the street.
The Pollock library is right behind Mifflin so if it is too noisy in your dorm you can go there to study rather than Pattee.
Close to town (McClanahans, Student Bookstore, Family Clothesline, many others)

That's pretty good! I'm in Business and the Smeal building is kinda far...half a mile away.

What dorm are you in?

My son was in Stuart - I think the second furthest away building from campus in East Halls (although it was real close to the stadium).
For his sophomore year he was looking to room in an area closer to central campus but as you will discover the process for staying on campus is not great. And if you are changing rooms you do not know where you will end up until the end of July. Also you could request a single in West and get a double in South. So - he is in an apartment now.
I think you are fortunate to get into Mifflin. Not all of your classes will be in the business building.

Most students say they prefer East halls because they are much more "fun". Beaver stadium is quite far from the rest of the campus, so I wouldn't have prefered East Halls anyway. I sent in my housing contract quite late too and was expecting supplemental. I'm really relieved now!

MightyNick - great news on your assignment! My son is in Simmons (also part of South Halls) and is very excited to be so centrally located. The HUB, The White House (for working out), and the downtown area are all VERY close. He's also a business major, so yes, the Smeal building will be a lengthy walk. He has one friend who got supp housing (6 in a room) and is not happy. Good luck this fall!

I remember expressing concern at a Penn State info session about housing shortages and the conversion of lounges into rooms. Of course they brushed it off with a "it rarely happens" response. Well, it doesn't sound so rare on here!

Not only is a 6-kid in a room pretty nasty, but weren't the dorms designed to have lounges for a reason?! I think a dorm without some gathering places stinks!

MightyNick
Very happy to hear that you didn't get supplemental. My S will be in Hartranft, which I believe is right next to Mifflin. Even though it might be a ways from the business building(s), its a great location. Also, you might be able to pick your class sections closer to your dorm.

thanks for the good luck wishes :)

I was looking at the campus map yesterday and I have to say, the location is quite good even though Smeal is a little far. I hope there is a bus to take me there during those cold winter days.

There is a shuttle but getting to the stop and waiting for it would take you longer than walking. And I don't know how crowded it gets/or if anyone ever rides it.
I don't know if they are still there but there used to be tunnels between Simmons and Hartranft and McElwain and Mifflin. Hartranft and Mifflin were male dorms and the guys ate in the dining halls and had their mailboxes in Simmons and McElwain (female dorms). In the winter the guys could come over through the tunnels and not have to wear a coat. (although it was not that far between buildings anyway)

Does anyone know what the floor plans of Tener and Brumbaugh halls are? how many rooms are on a floor, etc.?

lol you guys wanna complain about a class being far away?

I have one 8 am class...its my comp sci class. Now whats the prob wit this? its in the IST building and im staying in East ;). Im not really complaining though...my sched isnt bad and I don mind getting east (I knew I was gonna be in FISE house)

That sucks... my first class every day is 11:30 AM :D

Those who begin earlier end earlier. :-D

for anyone who got supplemental housing - don't worry about it so much. i know a lot of people who had supplemental last year and LOVED it. When there were other actual dorms available to move into, some of them actually chose to stay in the supplemental lounges for the rest of the year.

yeah, i also know people who loved being in supplemental last year.
im in mcelwain, south halls :-D
