How are dorms distributed at Cal Poly? Is it by major? I’m an architecure major, so should I apply to Sequoia hall?

There distributed on a first come first serve basis.. And all the department based dorms are really desired, so you should apply to Sequioa before everyone else has the opportunity.

There are also 2 dorms that are not by major (Yosemite and Sierra Madre). My son is a freshman and currently lives in Sierra Madre and absolutely loves it. Let me know if you have other questions.

My son was just accepted in Aerospace Engineering. What's the dorm of choice for those guys? Or does it not matter?

Santa Lucia is the dorm for Engineers at Cal Poly, they tend to have more serious students than Sierra Madre or Yosemite.

I live in Sierra Madre..while I love it..it's hard to get help because most of the people on my floor are Ag or Business students and I'm an Industrial Engineer..so they are taking different classes than I am. Also if your son/daughter doesn't like noise..um..Sierra Madre/Yosemite might not be the right choice since the floors are connected to the common room. I suggest you tour the dorms and see which one your kid likes.

Many thanks cdroyer. We definitely plan to tour the dorms now starting at Santa Lucia. Do you happen to know how one goes about arranging that?

I believe in the spring time is when they start giving out tours, you can call cal poly to be sure. Also make sure you send in your housing payment/dorm assignment quickly because at Cal Poly they fill up very quickly and your chances for getting a triple (or even a quad) go up if you wait too long.

And Sierra Madre and Yosemite are the only dorms on campus that I think do not have triples (besides the Cerro Vista/Poly Canyon Apartments )

How do I find out what the housing payment is? Call the school or can I find it on the web somehow? BTW, many thanks for your assistance and have a great Holiday.

I think I found most of what I need to know from the check list at Cal Poly Housing - Summer Quarter, 2007, Check List.
Apparently nothing can be done to secure housing by ED students until Feb. 3rd and then it's all accomplished through their my.calpoly.edu PURL. If anyone knows anything different please let me know.

Sign up as soon as you can... one of my current roommates (now sophomore, admitted regular decision) waited a day or two to register for housing and it was completely full. The red bricks, which were doubles, were even booked to room three. All of the off-campus housing intended for freshmen (ie, Stenner Glenn) was full, too.

We'll probably try to sign up at 12:00am on Feb. 3rd. One 'Catch 22' we're wrestling with is room mate determination. The guys my son wants to room with won't know if they're accepted until after ED sign up. Is there any way to deal with that?

IIRC, roommate preference can be changed on the housing application up until a certain date (in summer, I think). Room assignments aren't made until July-August. Your son can just sign up for the dorm he wants, then when/if his friends are accepted, they can request each other on their housing applications (as long as they both requested the same dorm). Roommate requests must be mutual.

That's very helpful. Thanks Ralph.
Merry Christmas!
