so i found out today that I can definitely attend UR since I got my loans below 10k. i was just wondering however how some people already know what hall they have been assigned to. when do we sign the contract and all that? i dont remember specifying a hall ever

That’s surprising since students have until May 1st to decide if they are even going to U of R. Were these freshmen who found out about their housing? Last year as a freshman, my D found out in early July which dorm and room she was in along with her roommate’s name and contact info. She was a RD, maybe ED students find out sooner or maybe the process is different this year. I believe she signed her housing contract when she moved in, but she also filled out a housing application that was included in her admissions packet. D is now a sophomore and found out today about her housing for next year. The Freshmen housing selection process works differently than for sophomore, junior and senior years which are selected by a lottery system. Hope this helps.

well I was looking on uroomsurf and some people on there already know. i thought you were randomly set with someone so idk why that site is even used for this. its all confusing. but thanks for clearing it up I’ll wait till july.

Hey Sharath,

I’m going next year as well. I’m pretty sure that you are set up with a roommate randomly unless you make a special request, which is what the people on uroomsurf are doing. If both people request each other, they get paired up. Hope that helps!

Once you enroll, a “Welcome to the University of Rochester” packet will be mailed to you sometime in May. In that packet is the housing request form. On that form you can rank your preferences for Freshman Housing (Sue B, Gilbert, Tiernan, Hoeing). You may also check off if you want a single sex hall, or a co-ed hall. You have the option to elect “Non-Smoking”, “Quiet Study”, or “Substance Free” halls. If you want to be in a triple to save some $$$, then you can check off that box too. My friends who were in triples actually liked having another roommate to expand their friend base. However, if you want a little more space to yourself, then just check “double”.

Finally, if you already know who you want to room with, you may write his/her name down on that housing request form too. Otherwise, you will be paired with a random roommate. There is no “Questionnaire” to match roommates. The only way roommates will match initially is that Residential Life pairs students who checked “Non-Smoking”, “Quiet Study”, or “Substance Free” together. I had a random roommate in a double on a single sex male hall, labeled “Non-Smoking”, and loved it. Your hallmates will be some of your best friends freshman year and beyond!

My advice: Turn in the form before the deadline (sometime in June/July). The earlier you turn it in, the more likely you are to get your top choices. Additionally, go out of your way to meet AS MANY people as possible. ESPECIALLY during the first day and throughout Freshman Orientation. The more people you meet, the more fun you’ll have - guaranteed. At the very least, get to know your hallmates well during the first week.

Only Early Decision students who may have already turned in this housing request form would have an idea where they are living… but maybe they are all mailed out during May. No incoming freshman should be certain of their residence at the U of R yet.

Just remember that your requests are only that: requests. They aren’t guaranteed. My d got an assignment to a “specialty” floor that she didn’t want (because not enough kids had voluntarily signed up for it), and was not happy with it all year. Luckily, she and her roommate became fast friends and made their own fun, so it kind of balanced off.

And there is always the possibility that you can end up in an overload triple. (Double room with 3 people.) Both my daughter (Class 2012) and her friend John from high school (Class 2011) ended up involuntarily tripled.

And then her sophomore year, she and her roommate ended up on a “specialty” floor, even though they didn’t request it.

Housing can be a tricky thing.

Thank you very much everyone that cleared it up for me. I’ll submit mine asap to avoid getting any unwanted circumstances. but urgrad why would you ever choose a single sex hall haha.

Actually I think all the freshman halls are single sex, but the floors aren’t. (Several halls on each floor. Each hall shares a single multi-stall bathroom.)

Upperclassmen may opt into mixed sex suites, though. (Suites are 2-4 bedrooms sharing a common area and bath[s].)

Your housing is discounted 20% (if I remember correctly) if you are assigned to a triple.

It helped the freshman year bill a little bit.

There are co-ed halls in the freshman dorms. On co-ed halls, every room alternates between males and females. These options are available on the 3rd floor and half of the 6th floor of Sue B every year. I don’t know for certain if this option is available on the quad (Gilbert, Hoeing, Tiernan), but I think that it is offered. Co-ed halls have a single sex bathroom though, so either the guys or girls on a specific hall might have to travel an extra 20 steps to get to their own bathroom.

As an upperclassman, you can live in a mixed sex suite.
