Houston for Rice Students?

Is Houston a good city to be in? Do you guys find plenty of stuff to do there?

You are asking if there is stuff to do in the nation's fourth largest city?

...

Haha well it's a hot, but fun city. There's plenty to do from food to shopping to the arts to concerts. Plus Rice helps connect students with events in the city all the time.

One thing to note is that Rice is right next to the lightrail. From the edge of campus you walk on block and you're at the lightrail. It's free for students (1$ otherwise) and really easy to use.

I haven't explored Houston that much yet--though I'm sure I will once I get down to school in a few weeks--but my dad and I did go downtown on our visit. The downtown area is very nice. There is a huge selection of restaurants and there were plenty of people out even in the middle of the week. It was not much of a hassle at all to get down there either.

The area immediately surrounding Rice (a short walk away) is great too. On one side there is a residential area with beautiful old homes and the Village, an area with tons of unique stores and restaurants. On the other side is the Texas Medical Center, which is a like a city in itself, and Hermann park which is huge and picturesque. I didn't visit them, but I believe Houston's museum district is also in or near the park.

My daughter just graduated from Rice and loved Houston- the area around Rice AND downtown. She took advantage of museums, shopping, concerts, opera, parks, zoo etc. She grew up in Dallas and hates Dallas, but loves Houston. She is working there this year and stayed in her same apartment near Rice.

There's definitely plenty to, and the light rail and metro are amazing for getting around, especially if you don't come with a car.

One thing I really appreciated during my freshman year was how Rice offers subsidized tickets and sometimes free entrance to events in the area; for example, last year my college offered subsidized tickets to see Stomp, and subsidized tickets to see Wicked were also available at one point.

With the passport to houston, you also get discounts to some stores in the area :), and clubs, the galleria, museums, and a lot more are all within traveling distance.
