A few frosh and their parents have posted here and I was just wondering how everyone is doing? We dropped off S at Colby today, and he was so incredibly happy to be back on campus.

AMAZING! What an incredible welcome! All news from Maine is good–COOT was amazing, dorm is fabulous, people are friendly–what more could you want? Of course, nobody’s working yet… Right now we are at the forefront of the Colby Fan Club, and so is D!
Honestly, everyone I tell about the welcome at orientation (Colby kids waving welcome signs and cheering and helping everyone move in, etc.) has been stunned. I’ve heard a lot of “wow, nothing like that happened at my kid’s school!” . And I can tell you, coming from the 5-college Pioneer Valley, I’ve never seen it, either. Go Colby!

cadence, Glad to hear all went well and that your D is loving it. A warning: no such welcome for upperclassmen. Sigh. We were spoiled as Frosh parents but this time around was a different type of welcome because the kids were so happy to see each other. Very friendly environment as always. Right before we left, I overheard my son’s roommate say, “Let’s go over and meet some freshmen so they’ll feel welcome.” It really is a close-knit community.

I am a Parent '13. I am curious - what do you hear about the drinking scene? My child is a bit put off by it.

The drinking scene is not as bad as people make it out to be. This is a college campus and there is alcohol, which is to be expected. Most of the kids who drink do it on weekends. When they drink, they are mobile from party to party, whereas the non-drinkers tend to remain static doing one thing with friends. So, if you arent drinking and arent with other non-drinkers, it would seem that everyone is drinking.

graybee - Is your child in a chem-free dorm? If he/she is interested in living in one, could he/she request a transfer to one of the chem-free dorms? My S is in one, says there’s drinking in Colby but since he hangs out with non-drinkers, the drinking scene does not bother him. He said that the drinking is no different from other schools, based on conversations with friends attending other colleges.

Ditto for my D–as I posted on the “Preppy?” thread, D isn’t feeling the pressure.
