Hey, I am an Indian studying in 11th in Dubai.
I was thinking about doing my under graduation in the US but then I thought about the placement opportunities. Can someone please tell me which one is better for job opportunities, colleges in the US or college like IIT and NIT in India?
In US, opportunities will be based on what college you are applying to.
If it is a top 20 college, then yes. You’ll have more research opportunities, internships and placements. (But keep in mind the exorbitant costs for intls, upto 10 times that of an Indian NRI’s).
Else, I’d recommend choosing NIT/IIT and doing PG from US.
Note: If you get in IIT Delhi/Mumbai/Kharagpur etc, think twice before selecting even the top schools in US. Indian IITs (the best ones) are well reputed around the world.
If you talk pure numbers IIT’s are no match for any US university. The average salary for an IIT grad is a measley 10000 dollars a year even the universities that are considered safeties like purdue have a higher average package. Do not get fooled by the newspaper articles that some IIT grad got a 1 crore job it is only 1 person out of the 10000 graduating from the IIT’s if you are looking to be an exception I am pretty sure 1 person will get more than that in the US. At a great US university you will not only be happy but the avg starting salaries are around the 70 to 80 k mark. If you are not looking for aid US is the better option.
Don’t even get me started on the NIT’s [-X
@Bored1997 It doesn’t make sense to compare a $10,000 job (~ 6 lakh) in India versus a $60,000 job in the US. (Also, the number of students in the IITs who get a 12 lakh job is non-trivial but again, no sense to compare.)
What might make sense to compare is the way one gets job in the IITs versus the US. (Like many other things?) getting a job in the IITs is a shepherded processes. There are Pre-placement talks, there are a whole bunch of people who apply to the same jobs. If you don’t get placed in Amazon, you will in Cisco and if it is not CISCO, then its flipkart or Oracle and so on {looking purely at CS jobs}. In the US, there are job fairs but you don’t know the competition, what gets you the job (e.g. recos) and so on. The process is an ongoing affair starting from your 2nd year where you start building a portfolio and essentially you are on your own. For the IITs you will have sessions like “fundaes session”, mock interviews, mock written tests and so on.
