Hello I am a rising senior in High School and I am looking to major in political science/government. I am from New York, but I am looking to go south. I want to know the strength of the political science programs at these universities. Here is the list of interested colleges:
American University
Binghamton
Boston College
Brown University
Clemson University
Duke University
Elon University
Emory University
George Mason
Georgetown
UNC Chapel Hill
College of William & Mary
I can only speak about Emory’s but it is excellent. A large number of my classmates who majored in the field or a closely related one think the education was outstanding with the political engagement opportunities the school virtually hands out to people, second to none. Even the few Republicans I knew thought it was great.
American, Duke, Gtown, W&M and (maybe?) Brown are all in Foreign Policy magazine’s Top 25 Undergrad Programs.
Also I believe that both American and Gtown have separate schools for government/IR related majors, and both are well-known for their programs.
I would add Washington & Lee to your list.
Why isn’t George Washington in DC on this list? And UMD? Both have strong poly sci/govt. depts and DC is the internship capital of the world at this point. You can’t open a car door in downtown DC in the summer without smacking an intern.
i hear that George Washington is preppy and I know it has the 2nd most expensive tuition in the nation (Parents aren’t rich I’m borderline upper middle class). I visited UMD and I didn’t like it.
Many of the schools are your list are preppy. GW is much less preppy than Duke, BC, Elon, Chapel Hill and William & Mary.
I guess Ill give George Washington a look.
Im not sure why a school being “preppy” would have anything to do with… anything. And besides, Georgetown embodies the wealthy white southern New Jersey stereotype. There isn’t a student in the school that doesn’t have at least one article of clothing from Vineyard Vines and a pair of Sperrys.
^I just don’t want a school that is just preppy kids like wake forest
Student apparently does not like something about George Washington. Seems fine since there are tons of other schools that are strong in Political Science. Why force that issue?
I’m not forcing the issue, I’m just saying that rejecting GW because it’s “preppy” while having Georgetown as your top choice doesn’t make sense.
Theres other reasons to why Im hesitant to look at GW but id prefer not to reveal them
