How Are These Sports Management Programs?

I am looking for a bunch of decent sports management majors in the NJ/NY area. Please let me know how the following schools are. I would also like to minor in communications or something English-related. All help is appreciated.

Saint John's University - Queens
Rutgers - Newark
Seton Hall
Adelphi
Bard College
City College of New York
CUNY
Five Towns
Hofstra
Iona
Marist
NYU
Pratt
SUNY Cortland

Thanks for the help! If you happen to know any other colleges I should consider in the NJ/NY area, please let me know.

I can only give you perspective on two of the schools. We visited with my Step-D who is interested in Athletic Training, but I’ll give you my impressions since the ‘field’ is somewhat similar and I was a Sports Management major myself (long-ago)

Hofstra - Did not impress. They seem to be very strong in tv/radio journalism (very impressive tv studio and equipment) and also stressed their strong programs in finance, etc. The admissions representatives and our tour guide said almost nothing about the Sports programs and from what we could tell, they were not a lot of emphasis placed on that area of study. Kind of felt like an ‘afterthought’ program if you want my honest opinion.

Seton Hall - We all loved. The tour guide spent a reasonable amount of time showing us the sports facilities on campus and talking about the basketball program, etc. The particular things we loved about Step-D’s Athletic Training program probably wouldn’t’ apply to Sports Management, but, unlike Hofstra, we felt that SHU has taken the time to set up internships, connections with NY.NJ sports teams, etc. that will greatly benefit Step-D in her studies there.

Sorry I cannot be of more help. Good luck.

Thanks for your help…I will make sure to save myself a rather long trip and cross Hofstra off my list then.

Does anyone else have any input?

You should expand your search a bit. Look at York College of Pennsylvania.

Bard doesn’t have sports management (or much of an atheletics program, for that matter) and it doesn’t have communication/journalism. However, if you’re interested in a traditional English/lit/creative writing major, you can’t do better than Bard.

OP, how did you come up with your list if Bard doesn’t have a sports mgt program? How much can your family afford?

I would be stunned, as well, if Pratt Institute has a sports management program. Here’s a link to a long CC thread on best sports management programs: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/350053-sports-management-major.html</a>.

I’d scour this for some tips on good programs at schools that are geographically desirable; the thread started in 2007 but has entries from a few months ago.
