i have one only hesitation about Vassar. is it true or not that it is uber artsy, with many/most students being of the quirky variety. I would say that I lean towards hipster, but really want a balance and do not like "poseurs". I think some of the schools that I perceive as more alternative (Bard, Wesleyan, Reed, Hampshire, Oberlin) are too alternative for me.

I get the impression that Vassar is more mainstream than neighbour Bard, more moderate than Reed. I’m considering Bard and one top New england LAC right now. I thought I’d enjoy the Vassar/Bard/Wes/Reed/Oberlin type more but I’m now having qualms about Bard.

Vassar students are smart, independent, creative thinkers. There are athletes (they have beautiful new athletic fields), pre med majors, econ majors, etc., etc. etc. You can tell a bit about the variety of students by looking at the clubs on the Vassar web site.
Visit. Go to a class. Spend the night in a dorm.

As several of the other posters have written above, Vassar is pretty diverse in terms of its students body. Yes, there are individuals (both male and female) who fit the descriptors “artsy” and the “quirky,” but they aren’t the only people on-campus. There are hipsters, athletes, hippies, pre-med kids, dancers, economics and mathematics students, musical theatre buffs, activists, gamers, actors, singers, liberals, moderates, a sprinkling of conservatives, musicians, partiers, studiers, aspiring writers, and people who don’t find under any of those categories. I’d say that as long as you keep an open mind, you’ll fit in just fine.
