How bad are winters?

For someone coming from a warm weather state? Anyone know how students from Fla, CA, and other warmer states do once they are there? Is it sunny at all during the winter? Thanks.

We are a northern location so get less sunlight in the winter as a result than someone coming from FL or most of CA. (We get more in the summer to make up for it  ). But I think we get more “sunny” days (i.e. no clouds) than does Chicago.

Honestly, winter here is mindblowingly brutal if you were not raised in the north. You will need to walk to class with a heavy coat, winter hat and gloves November through March and much of it trecking through snow and sometimes wind chills of -5, -20, even -30. The fall is the stunning and gorgeous, summer is AWESOME, spring doesn’t really feel good until May but you do need to really think through what it is like day to day in a very cold climate. Making snowmen, Christmas lights amongst the falling snowflakes and having to stay inside for winter storms with hot cocoa are fun…but feeling this bitter cold can be all be quite a shock to the southerners!!

Minnesota is awesome in the winter - hey what about the trail system? I think that’s huge! Never go outside and stay warm! Ok so it’s not the whole campus but downtown MPLS is awesome. :-bd

We know people who bike to work every day even on the coldest days. They use the dedicated bike trails which are kept plowed in Minneapolis. People do outdoor activites here when it’s below zero. It’s really the wind you have to worry about - not the temps. You can always dress for the cold.

Also there is the Gopher Way for a good part of the Minneapolis campus - both east and west bank. You have to walk outside for a bit (not much) to get to the Wash. Ave. bridge which has an inside walkway (not heated, but does have roof and walls).

Thanks for the responses. My son loves what he has seen of the university on-line and in mailers.
