How bad is CMU Engineering grade deflation?

What is the average gpa/grade distribution of CMU Engineering students? I’m asking because I plan on applying to graduate programs after graduating. I’m assuming it’s low…that being said do you think it’s easier to get a higher engineering gpa at GAtech or UMich or do you think all of these programs will have pretty similarly hard grading?

thanks!

I have a TA for my MechE class and his GPA in undergrad was a 3.4 (WPI? I think) and he’s getting his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at CMU! I think you should know that engineering will deflate your grade since it’s hard in nature, but I am confident engineering graduate programs take that into consideration and focus more on your projects. So yes it’s low, but nothing to raise alarms. I’m confident it will be the same for GaTech and UMich since they have strong engineering programs. So choose a school that fits your needs the best (housing, proximity to home, food, campus life, school spirit, etc. whatever you feel is important).

And always remember to do your best, and not getting an A in a class is not the end of the world, but just the end of the semester. General advice: ask for help as soon as you feel the need for it, don’t feel embarrassed to ask for help, and stay on top of your work it is possible to maintain a high GPA in engineering (it’s all up to your determination, work ethic, etc.) Overall I think in CMU’s CoE there isn’t a grade deflation serious to note like their other departments that are notorious for it.

GA Tech grading is MUCH easier than CMU or other tough programs like MIT and HMC.

Thanks for the info! How hard do you think it would be to maintain around a 3.6 in engineering?
