I'm on my school's mock trial team, and I love it. This year, we've qualified for regional finals, and will hopefully make it all the way to state. (At this point, we're one out of 6 teams in the state)
So I was just wondering, does it look good to universities if you do mock trial at a high level? Would it give me an advantage over an applicant who, for example, played an instrument or something?

My kids both do/did MT. What looks good on your application is that you are passionate about something and can speak intelligently about it in interviews and write about it in apps. No one can say whether MT is better or worse than music or other ECs.

MT has concrete advantages you can talk about: (1) intellectually challenging, having to learn the Rules of Evidence, having to figure out how to structure direct and cross exams etc; (2) public speaking and confidence; (3) thinking on your feet as you get thrown some objection you did not see coming or some other wrinkle; (4) it is a team activity so requires collaboration; and (5) it is a long term commitment (our teams start in Oct and compete in Feb, with State in March) which makes you balance the rest of your commitments and requires that you stay focused on this over a period of months.
