I'm really interested in joining the division at my school.
The only problem is, I have trouble being assertive and speaking loudly..
I'm kind of shy when it comes to public debate.

Do you think that I can do well in the club?
I want to learn about all of that legal jazz, and I want to take on cases, and do research.
It sounds like a worthwhile EC. I wanna give it a shot.

I say go for it. Public speaking is an essential skill so it’d be a helpful way to improve your vocal projection. I think that’ll be easier to fix compared to controlling nerves. I used to get so nervous that others could hear my voice tremble. Now I’ve gotten past that so there’s no reason why you can’t overcome being soft spoken.

I did mock trial last year, it was pretty fun. that is when you are winning so to speak.
Although i quit because i don’t want to be a lawyer anymore but if you are interested its a fun EC

Yeah, we have to try out too… Tryouts are tomorrow. They’ll be asking us for our opinion on a number of subjects and we have to give well-thought out answers. I’m not very prepared - the meeting was yesterday (Friday) so I only have today to get ready for whatever the attorneys throw at us.

I’m thinking I just won’t try out, then…
I’ll see what happens…

My friend who’s in MT told me to get over my nerves and just assert myself, be the first to talk, even if I’m scared of public speaking. She said that once I get talking, I’ll be fine. Is that true?

This may be late, but anyone who’s having this dilemma as well:
Mock Trial will be the best thing that happened to your self esteem. It teaches you to stand up for yourself, to make your voice be heard, and how to manipulate words.
I’m a sophomore and the closing attorney on my team- and this year, we came in 3rd in the state. It’s A LOT of hard work, and that is no exaggeration. You’re going to stress and sweat and put your blood into your work, but the feeling of satisfaction cannot be reciprocated.
The people you meet in Mock Trial can very well become your closest friends. They’re your family, because you go through the worst (i.e. Judge’s long spiels before revealing their decision) and as they say, those who mockie together, stay together.
It looks great on an app, too! It shows dedication, commitment, and prowess!
Just make sure the other ECs you’re doing don’t clash too much with MT and don’t do too many other ECs that will stress you out.
Oh, and if you’re not a good public speaker, don’t worry. Brave it out at tryouts. After that, your coaches will teach you the ropes and how to become better - not only at public speaking- but at analysis, crossing (if you’re going to be an attorney) and evading the question if you’re a witness.
Whatever you do, enjoy yourself! You’d be surprised- satisfaction, contentedness, and happiness come in all shapes and sizes (even a courtroom LOL)
