These are two strengths in my application (one I controlled, the other not so much), and I was just wondering how big a role each would play in my application? Thanks for any info/responses.
Depends upon the school. Some schools do not consider URM status or Class rank in their admission decisions. California UC’s and Cal States are some schools in that category.
Check the common dataset for each school of interest and it will show what they consider important.
This is assuming they consider both.
It still will depend on the individual college.
Thanks for the reply any info leading to a more clear answer is good. So lets say the college says a big role in your deciding to admit you is GPA and Cultural Diversity?
Its a great hook for colleges that consider race. But you know this already no? Biggest hook of all is a URM who is both sporty and smart.
@suzyQ7 Sweet thanks for the reply! Though I don’t agree with necessarily I was just wondering how big of a role it had in my application I knew it had an impact I just wasn’t sure how large. I was just wondering because I am a URM who is rank 1 in my class though I don’t play sports I am an avid lifter. Thanks again for the reply.
A URM with a #1 rank will be viewed very favorably.
Colleges all have their own methodology of accepting students. Obviously, being rank 1 will look great to them, but tif you class size was 50 and another applicant’s were 1000, they would have an upper hand. URM will only go so far. If you’re not a qualified applicant, you won’t get in just on your race.
Sports will only be a hook if you’re being recruited to the college’s athletic program.
My class size is 415 if that helps though my ACT score was only a 31, and the colleges want to go accept an average of 32 as of last year (the average of 2015 they accepted was 31). Thanks for the replies guys, means a lot.
You are a very strong candidate with URM and rank 1.
I know people who can get accepted even if their scores are lower bc they are generally well rounded students and are minorities
