How can I be successful in AP Calculus and AP Physics?

Does anyone have any tips so that I can be successful in AP Calc AB and AP Physics C? I would really love to get an A in both classes (I’m planning on going into Mechanical Engineering in college)

If anyone has taken the classes, what do you wish you would have done or is there any advice that you could give?

My goal is to learn the material, not memorize it. I’m going to need to know it for the future anyways. I have been fine so far in the classes but I know that they are going to get more difficult. I have been watching videos on the individual subjects we are taught in each class (on Khan Academy or Youtube) and that has seemed to help my understanding

I haven’t taken AP Physics (not offered at my school :frowning: ), but I can make a recommendation for Calc.

For me, Calc concepts were always easy to understand, but to do Calc well, that isn’t enough. You have to be able to do the math without any mistakes. I would recommend doing the homework your teacher assigns at least twice - once to gain an understanding of how to do all of the problems, and a second time to reinforce the ideas and learn to do it without mistakes. Seeking out extra sources of questions (like Kahn Academy) can also be helpful. Honestly, in the end all you can do is just practice practice practice until you can do 5-10 problems of the same type in a row without messing up once. It may seem a bit tedious, but it’ll get you an A.

The same idea goes for the AP test. If you ever do a couple of practice tests, you will realize that a lot of the problems begin to look the same, and with repitition, the test will become easy (I got a 5).

Good luck this year!

Thank you!! I will definitely do that. I would really like to get a 4 or 5 on the test at the end of the year. That is really good advice.

Advice for AP PHYSICS: Practice practice and DONT just plug and solve. Think about each subject but you need to study very hard to understand it. Especially if it is your first time being exposed to PHYSICS.

For both subjects: PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!! Calculus, to me, was a bit easier because I felt that the concepts were easier to grasp. Physics, requires much more studying than calculus, IMO. To do well, you need to expose yourself to a variety of problems, so you can do well on your tests. Also, a tip, differential equations come into play early in Phys C, so you may want to self study integration and diff equations early on! Good luck! Im doing Phys C and calc BC right now, and its definitely doable. A bit difficult, but if you like the subjects, it should be a fun ride.
