How can I find out about PLAN pretests?

I've searched all over the web and on act.org, but I cannot find anything about upcoming PLAN pretests for 10th graders like where the testing locations are or the price.

Does anyone know how I can find out?

Not sure what you mean by a PLAN pretest. In our district the PLAN test is administered by the district and given in the high school to all sophomores. I don’t think the PLAN is something you can signup for on your own separate from a district administraton. Are you in an ACT predominate area, midwest or south? Are you home schooled? I think in our area home schooled kids can contact the district and take the test when given by the HS.

I go to a public high school in California. The reason I am asking is because the only test the school gives out is the PSAT, not the PLAN. I am working on taking the PLAN on my own time, since no other student takes it at my school. That’s why I need info, dates, places, etc.

The PLAN is as much for districts and schools to assess how they are preparing their students as it is for students assessing how they will do on the ACT. At act.org if you click on ordering the PLAN the two choices are district order and school order. Normally there is no charge to the student. There aren’t dates or locations other than when the school or district administers it.

You could talk to someone at your school and see if they would order it for you and administer it. You’d likely have to pay for it which you seem willing to do. The only reason I can see doing this is because you plan on applying to college(s) where the ACT is the predominate test taken by prospective students. My personal, somewhat informed opinion is that there really isn’t an advantage to taking the PLAN over taking the PSAT as a sophomore. You can also take the ACT as a sophomore and retake it ‘for real’ in the spring of junior year. And all colleges truly will take the SAT.

If you are concerned about the differences between the SAT and ACT, imo taking the PSAT as a sophomore and junior and then getting an ACT prep book and taking some practice tests before the junior year ACT would be enough.

Here’s an old cc thread about taking the ACT as a sophomore:

great thanks so much for that info:D

So Helena - were you able to find out more about taking the PLAN? They don’t give it at my daughter’s school either (CA public high school) and when I asked about it were pretty much unfamiliar with it. When I explained that it was the preliminary test for the ACT the response was “oh no - we don’t give that - only the PSAT” - frustrating! I, too, wondered if my daughter could take it somewhere on her own. I did see, on the Kaplan website, under “Free” events - that they have sites where you can take a practice test for $25.00 (umm…how is that “free”…?) - I guess that might be the next best thing. Let me know what you find out!

Hello MTMama:)
Yes, public California schools do not regularly give out the PLAN tests. I asked my counselor again today actually and she said no student has taken the PLAN test, but just practiced taking the ACT prep tests until normal testing conditions. I was very upset. The SAT is not the dominant standardized test in our area. Don’t let that stop your daughter though. Also, yes the test is $25.00 sadly:(
