On the CSS Profile and one of the questions asks me:

"Enter the total current value of this parent's tax-deferred retirement, pension, annuity, and savings plans. Include IRA, SRA Keogh, SEP, 401(a), 401(k), 403(b), 408, 457, 501(c) plans, etc."

I don't think my dad even set up a IRA or etc? Is it possible that it's 0 even though he plans to draw social security upon retirement?? (or ss has nothing to do with that question?)

An IRA is different from SS. He could be planning on supplementing his SS with money from an IRA. Can you ask him??

I don’t even know how to ask him since it’s hard for me to translate to my parents and i always ask my mom about his information since she knows what he’s doing. My dad makes so little like less than 10,000 a year so it’s possible for it to be 0??

Is your dad self-employed, or does he work for a company? If he is not self-employed, he may have a voluntary retirement savings plan at work (most likely a 401K). Either way, he could have an IRA. Ask him if he has saved for retirement other than paying into social security. He will understand, I am sure. It is very possible that it is 0, since it can be difficult to save for retirement when you don’t earn a lot of money. However, I have seen some very low-paid people who manage to save for retirement - so you definitely need to ask your dad.

Okay thanks! :)

He’s does not work for a company nor self employed. It seems like he’s a dislocated worker but I don’t even know. Like he can be fired easily if his boss wants to do that and he would need to find another job. His job isn’t considered “stable” and his pay is never constant each year. He could earn alittle more or less.
