How can I get into Columbia?

Hi there, here are my qualifications. I'm outstanding at science and mathematics, took Cal-bc junior year, going to do linear algebra this year at nearby college, ( Im a upcoming senior btw). Took physics, chem, stats.. All ap. Placed in UIL mathematics regional several times. I spend my spare time studying more advanced subjects. I own a small business doing wholesale consulting. I designed a supercar running on a jet engine ( Some robotics and automobile experts are intrigued by it.) I have great recommendation letters from a well know math teacher ( she was invited to MIT several times as guest speaker) . But the biggest problem is, I don't take high school too seriously. I rush through my hw without checking and I'm always the first one to turn in a test. My grades are usually in the mid 80's and one high 70's because of this. Also I moved to the U.S 2 years ago from singapore. I speak and write english well but its not good enough for me to get a 2300 or higher on the SAT ( mine is 1890) I'm taking the SAT again in october. Do you think I can get in Columbia? Is there anything I can do in the mean time to increases my chances? I visited the campus this summer and I firmly believe Columbia is the place for me. Please give me some useful suggestions. Thanks a lot!!!

Your academic achievements to date put you at the extreme end of applicants. You seem to have the potential to do well at a good school. But in the ultra selective college environment, the pool is filled with multiples of super qualified applicants. Perhaps investigate some sideways engineering schools. Good luck to you.

Thanks. Would my chances increase if I get a better score on the SAT? I can probably get a 2200 in October. Also, I’m taking all Ap classes next year and my GPA might increase.

I’ll be honest with you, you’re chances don’t look good at all. B’s and C’s on your report card, along with a “hopeful 2200” at Columbia aren’t enough. You’re ECs are interesting/strong, but you might want to aim for schools that are good, but easier to get into. Either way, good luck!
