im shooting for
UCLA, UC Berkeley, UCSD

Get a 4.0 UW, and take as many weighted courses as you can; your 10th grade GPA will really hurt you at the UCs, which are reaches right now. Get high officer positions, and try to show a passion/focus for something. Seek out awards that will distinguish you. There is no consensus on which SAT prep is most 'accurate'; people have mixed results with each. Try to go for a really high SAT score (2250+) -- that (along with these other things) might make up for a weak GPA. The People to People Ambassador program means little; a large number of students are nominated for it.

Good luck.

thanks a lot
yea im taking 5 weighted courses for junior year x.x
but i was also told that the UCs also like improvement between sophomore year and junior year
as for positions
that wont be a problem :)

3 APs and 2 honors

rofl...why are there so many "how can I improve" threads now?

Coz everyone wants to make last-minute improvements to maximize their chances at HYPS or wherever.

bumpity bump

No, its because all of us who are going to be juniors know that we have the biggest year ahead, and need help approaching it.

^^ I agree -- junior year is a tough year. That's the time that college-bound students should be on this board, and 'improvement' threads are much, much more valuable than 'chances' ones.

If I had known about CC in junior year like my friends that introduced me into it did, I'd say things would've turned out differently, so it's definitely good to know early, although people asking to be chanced as a sophomore does start getting annoying.

For your SATs, use the big blue book as I've found it helps not only the most, but is most accurate as well. Take them in succession and in one sitting, since what you want to learn from the SAT is to build stamina and to get a "feel" for the test. If you can pull a 4.3+ for junior year, then you're well on the way to fixing your sophomore year errors. I say you still have a good shot at UCSD, just don't slack off and try to get your SAT to 2100+ status. If you can steal club leadership in your clubs, it will actually help you get admitted as opposed to just being a "member" of a bunch of clubs as well.

is ucsd that hard to get into?

what if you only organized certain events, but weren't a leader in the club? and Thekj---I think you should look up the average stats for a ucsd freshman

I'll let you decide whether UCSD is hard to get into by yourself:
http://www.geocities.com/kisasong/UCSDComprehensive.htm
If you can score above a 7600 on that ^, then I would say you can get in. I don't consider UCSD too hard to get into, but I'm sorry but that sophomore year is really going to hurt. SD is formulaic, so I doubt you'll get many kudos for having a yearly improvement (provided you have a big leap for junior year), which might factor into LA and Berkeley, but unless you drastically increase the number of leadership EC's in your resume and up your SAT, it won't help much for those two schools either.

well i calculated what i got according to that
and i got bout 7800 something :)
with what i have right now
there was also some stuff i didnt get or understand so :P

^I don't think so. Your GPA alone (with what you have), is -600 pts from the average. Also, I don't see any EC's that would count for anything. Again, this all comes down to it being too early to set everything in stone, but what you CAN do is get a hard junior year, and make sure you study for those SATs. You can still get a winning combination to get into 'SD, but clearly not on the track you're on right now.

ok thanx
im really looking forward to junior year because im going to be doing a lot of things
but the school i really want to get into is ucla
anything ill have to do, other than sats, grades, etc
like anything i can do to improve my ecs or something?

There is a whole part of the application where it lists awards. I don't think it would be helpful to admission if you don't have anything in there. Also, get leadership positions where you can write, on the part where you elaborate, something more than just "member". Get a couple of presidencies, or lower positions in popular/well known clubs (ie. NHS/CSF/Key Club).

try to get all A's.

as for awards i might have some
cuz ive taken all honors courses since freshman year i dont know if that qualifies as honor roll
and for leadership
i can easily gain positions
in senior year i would probably be prez for the 2 clubs and maybe school office or class officer if all goes well
