I am a high school senior that would love to go to USC. My grades however are not that great. Freshman and Sophomore year of high school I did not try very much and had a low GPA do to that. I did however loose my mother summer of freshman year so that had something to do with me not wanting to try in school. Junior year I was able to bring my grades up but they still do not seem like they are standard for a USC student. I have been involved with basketball for 2 years, and track for 4. What can I do to improve my chances of getting into USC? My GPA is around a 2.0 with a ACT score of 22. Do I have any chance what so ever of even being considered for USC?

Ouch. I’m sorry about your mother, but a 2.0 GPA and an ACT score of 22 indicates that you are simply not ready for USC. If you had an ACT score of 30 or so, and had an effective essay to explain your poor grades, then USC would be much more understanding and realize that you do have what it takes to succeed there. But your ACT says that you just don’t have the chops.

Still apply if you think you’ve written a knockout essay, though.

I’m really sorry it sounds like you’ve had a rough time. But unfortunately I don’t think you have a chance. Maybe if you started at a community college and worked your way up?
