How Can I Improve This Score?

Okay, I took my SAT Exam on June 3, 2006, and my score was
520 CR 670M 530W(8 essay) = 1720.
I took the PSAT in October 2005, and my score was
55CR 67M 55W = 177.

I am aiming for above a 220 on my PSAT.
Is there any way I can improve my score?

Thank you for your concern!

your SAT and PSAT are not that far apart, It was your first time so it doesn't matter if you did bad (I got worse on my first try). Just practice. Do tons of practice questions and revew the material that you need to know

use the blue book (official guide for the new SAT) and Barron's 2400.

Is the Critical Reading really all vocabulary?

mainly yes. which is why you have to read allllot and learn vocab.

writing is mainly grammar and the vocab you learn for the critical reading will help you in writing the essay.

practice makes perfect

How many times do I have to say this, arrgh.

73% of the section is Reading Comprehension. Try doing vocab to improve 73% of a section, not gonna happen! If you hate reading, I have bad news you need to get better at it.

Continue with the passages in The Official SAT Study Guide (the Blue Book) and maybe supplement it by reading an article or two each week from The New Yorker or another college-reading-level periodical, and after reading it ask yourself: what was the main idea, in other words why was that article written?

Vocab will help your CR score, but Reading Comprehension is just more important for CR, it is a skill used in Writing Skills section as well, and just may help you on the long Math questions as well.

Take some time to learn vocab, but focus on Reading Comprehension.

Thank you, but I only I asked a question?
Why did you shout at me?

he wasn't shouting at you. he's just giving you good tips and using an affirmative tone.

I believe he was responding to stuck on 1700, who said that CR is mainly vocab.

You can improve the score by retaking the test, getting more questions right and less questions wrong. The SAT is not rocket science.

Well I used PR PSAT and I liked it a lot. I went from a 170 sophomore year to a 212 junior year. While it's not all because of the princeton review, that did help some.

Uh mikentemaddog that was a little uncalled for. If you don't have anything helpful to say why do you waste your time?

I was responding to someone who was giving you inefficient advice.

I did not mean to yell or castigate you in any way, you are asking a great question, and one that deserves to be answered, but it deserves to be answered correctly.

I was miffed that another poster was giving you the same bad advice that I hear almost on a daily basis and usually it is not my place to correct what I hear, but this time I had a voice and wanted to make sure that you received the correct answer to your question.

Okay, thank you all for your assistance.
If you anything more to say, please post.
I will accept anything.

"You can improve the score by retaking the test, getting more questions right and less questions wrong. The SAT is not rocket science."

pretentious much?

Also, I've been doing the SAT Question of the Day, but for some reason, only easy questions are given.

However, I do like the concepts I am being taught, especially from the SATQotD of July 28, 2006.

Is that the main point of the SATQotD?

Q of the Day are free but too easy.

I think SATQotD are pretty good practice. They are not too easy. IMHO they resemble the actual test quite well.

A student of mine last year gave me 20 questions-of-the-day and they were very easy. The vocab on the SC questions was far too basic, and the math questions were at a difficulty of about "3", so middle of the road.

But maybe they have gotten better since then, that was a little over a year ago. I will check up and report back.

consider the satqotd as a warmup ;)
