He's going into the 10th grade. Back in the 7th grade, I think he got like a 550 on critical reading. Ever since then the main reading he really does is whatever they read in English class. Admittedly, I never read books for English class. I almost always just used Sparknotes summaries. I ended up scoring a 660 on the critical reading section, so I think my brother has a lot more potential.

What can he do to get 750+ from this point on? I think it's way too early to do practice passages, so I guess I'm mainly looking for reading material ideas. To get 750+, should he be reading material other than books for school? I've encouraged him to start reading The Economist as well.

Honestly, I dont think there is any need for him to do any intensive reading for the SAT.

This is because there is one major fact about the CR section that is important to know: it is basically an open book test. Therefore no extensive reading is effective for the test.

rather, he should focus more on expanding his vocabulary because that would be extremely important in order to boost his score.

Also, since he’s going to be a sophomore, he should focus now on the PSAT and do well on that.

Overall, he should study for the PSAT (which is a pre-SAT), study vocabulary, develop strategies for the passages such as practicing on focusing on the main idea, tone, argument of passage rather than the details, make notes as he reads, and ALWAYS see if the answer is stated in the passage to see if its correct.

I also recommend that your brother go on College Confidential himself to check out the SAT prep section so he can get the resources he needs to get his desired score.
