How close would you cut it?

We are still holding out for a waitlisted position at Northwestern, but no word yet. As you know, deposits must be in by May 1st. I think I'm set to mail our check to Hartt by this Saturday if we haven't heard by then. Northwestern told us that even after May 1st there is a procedure to change; we would lose our deposit at Hartt. NU doesn't offer merit based financial aid, so I was hoping someone accepted into the flute major got a sweet financial package from somewhere else. Any last minute waitlist stories out there?

D was on waitlists (cello) at Oberlin and Eastman in '05. She had good offers of merit aid at Jacobs (IU) and DePaul. She chose DePaul because of the teacher and never looked back. If you like the teacher at Hartt, I suggest you accept their offer and make a deposit.

BEK- Do you have an idea of her position on the waitlist? You can delay up to the deadline, send the acceptance and check via FedEx to Hartt the day prior to May 1.

If you take that route, I'd suggest an email to Lynn Johnson (or a named contact if other) at Hartt admissions telling them your intent, the check #, messenger service and tracking number just for safety's sake.

You have to do what you need to do to guarantee a place regardless of school. Unfortunately, if you do change, you'll lose the deposit. I don't think a housing deposit is required till sometime in June or early July as I recall from a few years back.

Too late to edit my post above. Doublecheck the housing deposit requirements for UHartford. I think incoming freshman at Hartt are allocated housing based on date housing deposit is received, not the date the acceptance deposit is received.

I just wanted you to consider this and not miss it.

Be careful!

My D sent her signed scholarship contract to her school of choice by UPS 2nd day air last Wednesday. We assumed everything was in order until we learned a day later that UPS had lost the package. All is well, the package finally arrived today.

Finally, (and perhaps this is already understood) my D had to sign a scholarship contract agreeing not to consider offers from other NASM members after May 1. This contract was part of the scholarship package from not only her final selction but from most of the others as well.

It looks like Northwestern and Hartt are both members of NASM.

Regarding the position on the waitlist: The dean informed they offered two people waitlist slots (my daughter being one of them) and they are unranked. D emailed both the dean and the professor indicating that NU is her top choice and that she would like to remain waitlisted. I don't know whether the other person chose to remain on the waitlist or not; and I don't know how many flutes were offered admission.

The dean also said there is a way for the deans to talk after May 1 should a position become available, but that the tuition deposit of $500 would be lost. Not a factor in my mind when you're looking at making a decision that will affect the next several years of your life.

So I guess we will do what's comfortable for us....send in the deposit and acceptance on the 26th and continue to wait for just a bit longer and make the change if needed. We consider it a winning situation in any case - for us it's a choice between good, and even better.

We'll be doing the same. My D chose Ithaca, but is still waitlisted at Maryland (closer and cheaper!). We'll accept Ithaca but send in the deposit at Maryland just in case, for insurance...if we don't I think she'd lose the $5,000 scholarship at Maryland, should she decide to go if she ends up being accepted in music. Seems like a chess game of sorts...

We also have to sign for a music scholarship and agree not to accept any other offers after may 1 at one school, but my son is seriously on a waiting list at another. Which school should I talk to first? Any suggestions for how to approach this?

mom4- I glanced at the acceptance thread just to refresh my memory of your S's acceptances, and the only 1 listed was Duquesne. If there's additional and you want them added just list them.

But that is neither here nor there.

Is there a way of knowing position on the waitlist? How strong is the desire for the waitlisted program? Are the two instructors/overall programs very close in terms of fit? You may not get great financial aid/scholarship money from the waitlist, a consideration if finances are a factor.

Depending on how you/son would answer some of the points I've detailed, you could always call the waitlisted school, explain you have to commit to school B so as not to lose a scholarship; they should be able to ballpark your chances of getting admitted off the waitlist.

Whoa,
twinboys - I've known the cello professor at DePaul for a couple years now - he's absolutely awesome both as a musician and a person. Your daughter's lucky to be studying with him :)

Also, about waitlists and such - if it I would go ahead and put a deposit for Hartt if it's not too expensive (most of the deposit $ at places I was considering was not really that much in comparison to, say, tuition... ha).
