I am planning on majoring in Physics or another related field. However, my high school offers pretty much nothing in terms of extracurriculars for sciences (I live in a rural area and there aren’t any other places I can really go to). Will this destroy my chances of getting into a top school for physics (UC Berkeley, UMichigan,Stanford, etc), even if I am the top of my class?I know that the most competitive majors at most schools are Biology and CS, but what about the physical sciences?
No it won’t impact your chances–most private colleges take a resource-based view of your high school career. That is, the look at how well you’e taken advantage of your academic/extra curricular opportunities reasonably available to you.
@hgrad2010 Thanks, I’ve been trying to start some opportunities for people like me but my teachers are pretty apathetic.
@GreenTea23 are you a senior applying to college now? If not, I’d recommend participating in the physics olympiad as a way to demonstrate your passion and facility with physics. I believe you will need to get a teacher to administer the exam, though.
@hgrad2010 Luckily I am a Junior. I will definitely look into doing the Olympiad, if I can find a teacher to help me out.
