How competitive is Korbel international relations?

My daughter is interested in the International Relations program at DU. I know it is highly regarded nationally. Is it more difficult to get into Korbel vs College of arts and sciences? Wondering if she should apply as a political science major instead, and maybe minor in IR. If she applies To Korbel and can’t get in, would they potentially admit her as poli sci anyway? Thanks!

What are her stats? DU is not an especially tough admit. They are known for IR as are many others. It’s one of their strengths but I wouldn’t say they are ‘elite’.

In general I would apply for the degree you want. You can check internal transfer requirements. But where you go for IR…in most cases won’t matter short of a few elite.

Hey, my son is a Jr at Korbel. I do not think it was difficult to get into. He had decent stats, was admitted to both American and GWU’s, but choose Denver for the mountains. His first two years have been spectacular. He’s in Europe for his semester abroad right now, but feel free to shoot me any questions. My youngest is a 2023 and DU is on his short-list as well.

She’s a 3.8 uw with 9 AP and great summer internships (DA office, campaign work).

That’s great. Where is he studying?

In no problem.

He’s studying at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. He’ focusing on economics at the Center for European Studies.

My son is a Masters student at Korbel and finished his undergrad at DU in Korbel as well. It’s a fantastic program and very well respected in DC (he was told this multiple times during his internship and the Korbel reputation helped him secure this position). He’s had several internship offers and tons of other opportunities. He has a job in the intelligence community lined up when he graduates early in March. DU’s 4+1 program is definitely worth looking into. He will have a double major, double minor + masters degree in 4.5 years. With your daughters AP credits she could definitely do the same and she should have no problem being accepted. PM me if you have any other questions.

Just an FYI, it sounds like DU has changed its 4+1 program. I think it is a priority acceptance program that allows undergrads to take 1 grad class per quarter, along with some guaranteed merit aid. I’ll post additional details when I know them. Son returns from his semester in Europe on Friday!!

@LiveWireSoCal did your son do any internships during undergrad?? If so were those arranged through Korbel??

They may have changed it but I’m not sure. When we visited the school before he started only one person was doing the 4 +1 program and I think his year there were a few. He did take a few summer classes and winter interim which allowed him to finish early. Most of senior year he was in all grad level classes. At the time you had to apply for the program Sophomore year (I think?) and if you had a 3.7 gpa then you didn’t have to take the entrance exam. The merit they gave him was very small compared to undergrad so keep that in mind. It did work out to be about the same cost however since they take less credits (12) per quarter. His internship counted for credit but we had to pay the tuition for those credits which was a little frustrating.

He did a virtual internship with the state department (2020 Covid year) and then another one this past summer which turned into his full time job. I don’t believe Korbel assisted in those other than the reputation of the school being key in the process. He probably applied for 50+ internships and was very proactive about it. They definitely have the resources to help if needed.

I hope your son had a blast while abroad! Mine didn’t get that opportunity as it was cancelled for Covid.

Thanks for the comments on internships. Now that I’ve had a chance to think about it, I believe the new program is some sort of Fellowship and that’s where the aid comes from???

I’m sorry your son missed the Interational experience. Mine had a great time, plus is bringing in 20 credits and I think 15 of those are for his second major!! Fingers crossed that this weather doesn’t affect his trip home.
