My daughter is planning to apply to the College at Georgetown to study Economics (for now). She is concerned about its reputation as being competitive between students (not clubs, classes). Do current students think kids compete a lot academically with each other in classes? Second, is this more within the business school and SFS or is the entire university pretty competitive with respect to grades, etc?
I’m not too sure what you mean by “competitive”, but I’d say that overall it’s not that competitive here. I’ve heard that the MSB is competitive, I definitely think the SFS is not. And the college usually isnt.
That was my question – I just wasn’t sure what to call it. So you would say SFS and the college are more collaborative versus MSB being more competitive?
My son is a freshman economics major (although taking basics this year) and he not experiencing any competition. In fact, he finds it to be very collaborative. His floor mates in his dorm tutor each other by pairing up strong subject students to weak subject students. And in his clubs he experiences the same thing–upperclass members sharing notes and class recommendations, etc. He is loving Georgetown.
Hi! I know this thread is pretty old but I thought I could comment because I’m a gtown student. The MSB definitely has a rep for being competitive, but in term of competition, pre-med kids take the cake. Other than that, I think everyone is pretty collaborative. And honestly, there will always be a few students who are very competitive and want to show off their grades, however it is definitely possible to find people who, although they still care about their grades, are not so obsessed with comparing themselves to others. Hope this helps Good luck to your daughter!
