So I’m an NMF and considering OU because of their generous aid. The only thing I’m not sure about is the location, I’m a socially liberal and not-very-religious from the bay area and I’m not sure about how I’ll do smack dab in the middle of the bible belt. I’ve heard that the majority of people at OU are religious and very conservative in general, which makes sense since Oklahoma is a very conservative state. I’ve also heard that there’s very little tolerance towards drugs. Can anyone weigh in on this? Especially if anyone has any experience moving from a more liberal area to OU
I’ve answered this question before, because it’s a fairly common one. I am a NMF that comes from a more northern state and generally identifies as liberal. I have had absolutely no trouble finding like-minded people. You need to remember that OU, like most colleges, is more liberal in general. The Honors College in particular is EXTREMELY liberal. There are many political discussion organizations within the Honors College that are trying to combat a the problem of single-mindedness, as the vast majority of students participating fall on the far left. Despite that, the college as a whole will certainly run more red than most places in California. The Greek system in particular you will find is fairly conservative. Overall though, I would say that it has never been a major issue for me.
Drugs are a tricky subject. As someone that doesn’t partake in them, I don’t have expertise in the matter. However, I do know many people that regularly use some. I would say it’s probably got a similar drug culture to those that aren’t in a legal state or have a reputation for drugs. It’s a large state school, there are plenty of people that share that interest if that’s what you’re in to.
Oklahoma is more on the end of the bible belt…see Alabama if you are looking for the middle.
WoolScarves has it right. All college campuses are more liberal (by far) than the populace as a whole. (excepting Liberty, Hillsdale, BYU, ORU and a few others)
Drugs is very broad term. Most of what people call drugs are illegal in Oklahoma, so you are risking your freedom if you import or use them in Oklahoma (or most states for that matter). That being said, if you mind your own business and your drug habit does not affect the health and safety of others, I doubt there will be a problem.
I’ll preface this by saying that I’m a liberal atheist Jew from Southern California who interned in Denver and recently graduated from OU.
For someone used to living in the Bay, OU will likely feel quite conservative, because most schools are conservative in comparison to the Bay Area or LA (your posting history indicates you’re from California). However, the student body is rather politically apathetic although there are certainly a fair number of people who obsessively follow the news (I’m a political junkie and easily found people to talk to thanks to the Informed Citizens Discussion Group and randomly conversations).
As Woolscarves correctly pointed out, there are many liberals at OU, especially when you don’t look at the predominately white social fraternities and sororities which tend to be overwhelmingly conservative Christian institutions (my non panhellenic sorority was overwhelmingly left leaning). The Honors College in particular is very liberal although libertarians are quite common. Outside of the honors college and PWI social Greek life, politically engaged students tend to be moderately liberal with a fair number of moderates and far right people thrown in.
All drugs other than alcohol are super illegal in Oklahoma, but many students smoke weed and there doesn’t seem to be a large stigma around it. However, it’s certainly less used and less visible than at California or Colorado schools. If you want more details, I can PM you. From my understanding, it’s rather hard to find a reliable dealer although many students go to Colorado for vacation and bring marijuana back to OU.
Adderall and other study drugs are somewhat easy to get, especially if you’re in the Greek system and finals are approaching. While I never used them (I just took a metric ton of caffeine pills), I was offered them a few times.
Ecstasy is probably the third most used illegal drug although it’s usually only found at music festivals or huge backwoods parties. To my knowledge, I never saw anyone rolling at normal house parties.
I only knew a few students who did psychedelics like LSD and shrooms. I believe they’re a drug that OU students have to actively seek out and will not just be offered at a party.
Cocaine is not common and I only knew one OU student who used it although I rarely attended parties with the wealthy frats. I transferred from Emory where coke was much more prevalent, especially among full pay students.
I didn’t know anyone who used heroin, meth, or opiates and remained an OU student.
