How conservative is the student body at NYU?

saw this in the UCLA forum and had to post it here

I'm awfully curious:)

as liberal as you can get

excellent. I'll fit in perfectly.

this may sound stupid, but i am not sure how those two are different. someone plz explain?

i thought he meant that the student body, as a whole, was as liberal as you can get

which would be excellent for me, because i consider myself a progressive.

I don't know too much about the student body, but I can guess it's fairly liberal a) it's a college, most colleges are pretty liberal. b) it's in new york city...traditionally a deomcratic city!

mmhm. good

Out of all the kids at NYU you can count the conservatives one one hand. Same thing with Columbia...

haha...
New York and Conservative don't go together. They are definately mostly liberals.

excellent, excellent.

u can def find conservatives. i'm more moderate than liberal or conservative tho...most of my friends are like that.

You'll find every conceivable 'type' of student at NYU, including conservative Republicans. Most students, though, are pretty apathetic politically so it's unlikely that any particular type of student would feel uncomfortable. As far as the city goes, NYC almost always has a Republican mayor, and NY obviously also has a Republican governor but generally, the state goes Democratic in national elections, so there ya go.

I just wanted to be reassured that I'll be able to associate with fellow progressives...thats all

Firewalker: You won't have any problems finding liberals at NYU, lol you might even think there are too many of them. I'm a moderately conservative republican, and I was concerned about the same thing as you before starting college, but I've found many others like me here. NYU is a big enough and diverse enough school, that no matter what your political leaning, you'll find others like you.

how is the gay factor then? I assume that beign gay in a liberal place is comforting?

Donkey: Gays are very accepted at NYU--the vast majority here will give you problems about it so you shouldn't worry. I don't know if this is good or bad, but homosexuals also seem to have their own scene here (e.g. I really don't have any gay friends and neither do any of my friends since we chill in different cirlces).

Which NYU school are you applying to? Tisch seems to have the largest gay community at NYU.

Im sure you'll find a greater percentage of conservatives or liberals in retrospect to what school your talking about. Im sure Stern has a lot of conservatives compared to the rest of the university...for example.

i want to go to tisch but fearing i may not get into NYU, i applied to CAS

donkey, why would you do that? Isn't WHAT you're interested in studying more important than where you study it?

not really. CAS has journalism so i want to take journalism as well. And somehow, I'll develop a film career out of that but I really really want to go to NYU regardless of what school i go to.
