I am curious about Coastal Carolina University’s social/political climate. Being in the south, is it a very conservative campus?

I wouldn’t say so. For the most part, the campus has a very casual and friendly vibe. Very welcoming, open, school spirited, excited, etc. Think more “by the beach” than in the south. Diverse student body from many different areas of the country, including a lot of northerners! I think its an open campus for the must part, politically/socially/whatever. The theatre department is obviously less conservative than anywhere else on campus, I’m sure, but no one I know if has really run into any large issues.

It’s a campus of 10,000 students, over 50% are from outside of SC. The campus isn’t conservative, but it isn’t Berkeley in the 60’s either. I’d describe the overall climate as “moderate.”

Thanks! These responses help a lot.

theatermom2013 - I sent you a PM

Excuse the wall of text, I was sadly born and raised in SC and I have a lot to say.

Speaking as an SC native, you’d be surprised to find that there are different areas of the southeast that range from militant racists to middle-class white Christians to the ultra-liberal, even within the state. CCU is a large school with students from all over the country, and while I haven’t experienced it first hand, I have several (liberal) family members whose main complaints were with the Conway natives, not the students.

If you’re really that worried about conservatives, just make sure to steer clear of the upstate, sans Greenville. That being said, definitely check out Charleston and Myrtle Beach if your D or S decides to attend!

Edit: Okay, I haven’t really answered your question at all. No. The campus is not conservative. According to my brother, unless your major includes many politics and current events, the majority of students are rather apathetic towards political parties. Be warned- it does have a rep for being a big party college (and I’m assuming you’re a mother) so it may not be the best choice for a student who’s accustomed to buckling down and studying in peace and quiet.

Coastal is probably one of the top few most liberal places in the state. >.>

The theatre department students are quite dedicated and most maintain great academic standing even with our extra curricular activities. Every school is what you make of it. Our classes don’t really leave room for too much excess. You couldn’t get through the school week.

^^What AlexaMT said!!! :)
