How cut throat is it?

For all those who have been to JHU or who have been accepted - is it really as cut throat as ppl make it out to be? or are they overexaggerating

Do a search here for "cut throat" also look at the Hopkins Interactive board.
Hopkins Forums

Because it's been discussed ad nauseam. To summarize, 99% of it is hyperbole.

After spending a year at hopkins, I find the general "cut-throat" myth about hopkins quite untrue and baseless.

Ditto..Is it competitive? Yes - everyone wants to do well in their classes. But it's not like people are trying to make you fail so they do better. The atmosphere is very collaborative - people tend to study in groups, work with others and help each other with homework etc. I'll put it this way - at least in my major, it wouldn't be possible to do well if I didn't collaborate with other people.

This thread should answer your question:
Hopkins Forums -> Competition: Does it exist?

Also try this:
Hopkins Forums -> Cuthroat opinion?

And as advised above, use the CC search function because this question has been asked many, many times.

I go to Hopkins, I am an engineer and I would definitely say that Hopkins is not destructively cut throat. The fact is that if you are a Hopkins student, you are an intelligent and driven person, so you wish to do well in your courses, but that does not mean that you are extremely cut throat. For the majority of my classes, I was working/studying with other students. This is very common, in our library, the levels that are normally the most crowded are the first two, which are primarily group study.

Yes there are students that don't go out of their way to help their fellow class-mates, but the majority of students will sit down and help someone that doesn't understand something. I helped tutor a number of my friends for Calc I, II, III, and Linear Algebra, not because I was getting paid for it...but because they were struggling and needed someone to help them.

So don't believe the cut throat rumours that are flying around about Hopkins...they aren't true.
