How cute is this college website TODAY? (Halloween)

http://www.vassar.edu/

Cute ... and community minded too:

Click on the Pumpkin Carving Contest.

"Tonight we’ll find out who wins the honor of having Vassar President Catharine “Cappy” Hill greet callers on their answering machine or cell phone voice mail. All entries in Campus Dining’s Pumpkin Carving Contest will be judged tonight at 7:30 pm in front of Main Building. Then, Cappy will record a personal greeting for the grand prizewinner, during which she introduces herself and tells callers the winner is not available.

Students could enter the contest by donating 10 campus dining points to receive a pumpkin, a knife, and a candle. Carving took place at the All College Dining Center (ACDC) on Tuesday, October 30. For each pumpkin sold, five dollars will be donated to the community organization Dutchess Outreach. This donation will mark the kickoff to Vassar’s Community Works Campaign for 2008, which officially launches Thursday, November 1. Contestants could carve alone or create a team."

The best college mailing we ever received was from Vassar. It was all about the dogs on campus!!!! I loved it!

I think that webpage is really clever, expecially the portrait.

And what a fun way to raise start their community project.

I'm fairly certain that the portrait is of Matthew Vassar, the school's founder.

Yes, that's the "ghost" of Matthew Vassar up in the left-hand corner! And while there were always great furry, four-legged "classmates" on campus, past President Fergusson's Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were the classy ones http://www.aavc.vassar.edu/vq/articles/Fran_Fall2001 (scroll down to the third photo)

Haha yes it is things like this that make me love my school.

MIT has similar approach on their website.
http://www.mit.edu/

If you sit and watch the critters that make up each of the letters on the main screen (link above) the eyes blink, mouths move, etc. Too cute!

Carnegie Mellon has used today to show off real life research that's kinda Halloween related: http://www.cmu.edu/index.shtml

Vassar definitely wins the cuteness award so far though!

aw so cute!

OK, I've had a few too many glasses of wine waiting on trick-or-treaters...I did not see any blinking by the creatures...(that's probably better than seeing TOO much)

memphismom-
Its the letters in VASSAR that have moving facial features. Give it time... and drink up!

sigh...I can never get these things to work...

all those e-mails that say, just scroll down to the end...you'll see why...I NEVER see why!!

Vassar discriminates against Mac users :)

Using Mac's default browser (Safari), the only animation happens on the right of the screen, where the black-and-white jack-o-lantern sticks her tongue out. Fortunately, I also run Firefox for just such occasions, so I did get to see the full effect. But really, now, does Vassar assume everybody uses a PC?

Actually, no! Vassar is an Apple campus with an Apple store!

memphismom-
I'd actually been so attuned to all the little blinking eyes all over the screen (even down att he bottom where the sitemap and "conact us" stuff is) and the flickering carved pumpkins, I didnt even notice tht the b&w pumpkin was sticking its tongue out! Thanks for that!

memphismom-
I sent you a PM. The VC webmasters want to figure out why you coudn't see all the animation. Thanks for your help.

Omg, when I saw the title of this thread, I immediately thought about how cute Vassar;s website was for Halloween, but I didn't think that that's the school the post was going to be about!

I must say that Vassar's website is lovely in general. This year they have decided to change it every few days, and I find that it is always tasteful (or fun!) and easy to navigate. It is very reflective of the atmosphere that prevails at Vassar, and often has beautiful pictures of the lovely campus and links to terrific Vassar history.
