US History - 770 :| expected an 800, but honestly I'm okay with this score
Chemistry - 770 :| around what i expected...
Math IIc - :( :( :( :( :( :( :( surprised me a lot. darn you, careless errors!
I'm applying to HYPSMCB/Caltech/etc and I'll only have one more chance to retake either the SAT (took it a year ago, got a 2130) or the SAT Subject Tests, in addition to the ACT (took it this month, got a 33). Which one should I retake, SAT I or SAT IIs?

SAT I for sure

What is your math score? Also anything after 750 is based on luck. You can only study up to a 750.

730 - sorry, meant to post it. yeah, I realize that 750+ scores are pure luck. But I really do think my score was 100% based on careless errors - I thought of a bunch I had made right after the test was over. I feel like a total idiot who really could have gotten an 800 if I were a little more careful…

and thanks, wombatsoup! I was thinking the same, but I’m just worried about the Math IIc score… considering a rescore of that one, since I was expecting higher… math is my best subject

I don’t know that I’d agree that 750+ scores are pure luck, but your scores are very good. Math could be higher but the other two are great :)

thanks, Charlie Brown lol of course 750+ isn’t all pure luck, but there is more luck involved in getting a score above 750 than there is in scores below it, which are more likely to result from lack of knowledge or excessive careless errors

Umm hate to break it to you guys, but there’s very little luck at all in getting above a 750+ in the math IIC because the curve is ridiculously generous. If you know how to do every problem but you “mess up” (that’s where the luck would come in to play) you still will get an 800 unless you “mess up” 6 times or so.

i think that like a ten or twenty point difference is a reasonable marginal error. Like if student A gets an 800 and student be a 780, it would be idiotic to assumm that A is straight up smarter than B. Take whichever ones you think you can improve on the most, to me that seems like sat 1. a 770 is a VERY good score. you don’t need to be amazing at EVERYTHING.

@KansasKid2010: yes, that’s exactly what i meant! i was referring to the chances of “messing up” when i said that scores of 750+ are largely based on luck - obviously you aren’t likely to be so “lucky” if you don’t know the material, but you could be “unlucky” if you don’t catch silly mistakes in your work - which seems to be my biggest problem, especially when i’m short on time. i KNOW that i’m capable of an 800 in math iic, but i tend to make stupid mistakes too many times :(

Retake SAT I. Your subject tests are fine.

No. The difference between 750 and 800 could be 5-10 questions. Even on a 95 question test, the difference is huge.
