How detrimental is a bad essay?

I submitted my application a few days ago, but in hindsight, I didn’t write the greatest essay. I wouldn’t say it was horrible, but it wasn’t my best.
Here are my stats:
-Michigan resident
-IB Program
-3.91 UW GPA, 3.89 MSU GPA
-30 ACT
-President of Spanish Club
-Secretary of Drama Club
-NHS member
-20 hour internship at a doctor’s office
-50 hours of volunteering
-Applied about three days after application opened

Will the bad essay be detrimental? If so, how much?

Thank you!

It depends on where you are applying to. Bad essays to good schools will really sink your chances since after a certain point it is more about essays and ECs than actual grades/scores. Bad essays to bad schools when you have good scores are still not likely to help you get in but they won’t sink your chances as much. It mainly depends on the rest of your application and the level of the school you are applying to.

I’m applying to MSU, which is a top 100 school, so it’s not the greatest school, but it’s very good.

https://admissions.msu.edu/admission/freshmen_profile.asp here are their freshman stats and you are above the 75% mark so it shouldn’t matter that much.

@woah - With your GPA and test scores, you will get in to MSU even with a bad essay (unless you wrote something psychopathic or plagiarized).

No, not psychopathic or plagiarized (lol), but just not my best. Like I said, it wasn’t horrible, just not what I’d submit to a reach school.

@woah16. MSU has the highest percentage in the Big 10 of graduates who would choose to return to their college knowing what they know now. I can’t link the website here, but if you shoot me a private message, I think they will let me link there.

(Full disclosure - I am a proud Spartan graduate! For various reasons, my first two sons chose other schools. But my third son is very interested in MSU. We are visiting in October.)
