Another thing one has to take into perspective when studying admissions is the time period when a student applied/was accepted. For example, Bush entered Yale in 1964, some time before Yale (and other colleges) changed from “old boys clubs” (for lack of a better term) into meritocracies.
Additionally, the Bush family was extremely affluent and well-connected; in fact, Bush’s grandfather, Prescott Bush, just happened to be Senator of Connecticut up until 1963, the year George W. Bush was applying to college. So for jive87 and anyone else who is jealous of Bush’s acceptance and believes (correctly, I would add :)) that he should not have been accepted, if you apply when Yale’s admission rate is (this is definitely a guess, but probably fairly accurate) around 25-30% and your grandfather is the Senator of CT (and your family is unbelievably rich), my guess is that you will get in as well.

It was over 40 years ago guys… it’s to be expected that the standards would be different in such a different time period. It’s like comparing the political spectrum of 1968 to 2010. It can’t be done- you’re not comparing apples to apples, but rather apples to oranges or something haha. It seems apparent that the college selection process was much more different back then… I mean, come on, how else would George W. Bush be able to get into Yale?

He got into Yale for the same reason he got into Harvard Business School. Brains, good grades, and high SAT.

There is no such thing such as elitism and favoritism. :p

^ lol suuuuuure.

It’s because his father went there and was already politically connected at the time.

It’s because the admissions officers knew he would be president one day.

^ Actually, they had him as governor, and then two possible exit paths (retirement or president). They got lucky ;)

Orly? That’s awesome. I actually had no idea what I was talking about.

Nah, I was joking too :P

Damn you. I had believed you too. Well played.

Its obvious that GW. Bush got into yale because he was an old family aristocrat. Lets face it, the aritocrats get much more favor in US.

On one hand you have the rich people (doctors, Ibankers, partner lawyers) and thne you have the old families (Bush, Kerry, ROckefeller, McCain, etc.)

Why, what clever analysis, jasonInNy. It would seem as if the person on post #2 has also made this connection.

My dad got into brown with a 1100/1600…

^That comment is irrelevant for so many reasons, not the least of which being that Brown is, well, um… Brown. (No offense to the institution; I actually considered going there and Brown is a great school, but their admissions are a bit… shall we say, bizarre?)

Your dad’s Emma Watson?

^Or maybe he was an athlete with a good GPA.

Well, Yale was actually smart in choosing George W. Bush despite his lackluster grades. He went on to become a 2 time president and governor of Texas.
