I would like to know what he wrote down too ^^

genius thread btw, very fun to read.

You were waitlisted because you practically showed no interest in Duke. You don't care about Duke and you only applied to Duke because it's ranked 8th. You should be glad that MIT accepted you (which is very impressive). Have fun at MIT & stop whining about being waitlisted at Duke.

btw, this is the funniest thread i've ever seen on cc

"anyway.. My best friend wrote down 2 sentences for the Duke essay. He got in. International student."

Those sentences must have been LONG.

Wait...If I'm not mistaken, the "Why Duke?" essay is optional. I didn't even write one and still got accepted.

^ You're correct.

well there's always that saying..."the biggest fool is the one that opens his mouth"

OldCard, you praised joelyam2 for using WashU as an example, so I was clarifying something that you said you agreed with. If Duke and WashU are not the same as you say, then joelyam2 would not have "gotten it" and his example would have been inherently flawed. There's no point in bickering about it so I'm just going to leave it at this: schools look for interest, yes, but Duke does certainly not fall victim to Tufts syndrome....No top 10 schools are in the business of yield protection. The OP could have been waitlisted for several reasons and arguing that it was a "lack of demonstrated interest" is pointless without having seen the actual application.

didnt visit
didnt write an essay
I got in,
op didn't get in, not cause of lack of demonstrated interest, because I am sure i showed less,
and having stats that good and being female will get u into MIT no doubt,
but wont cut it for Duke,
you have to be likable too

your genuine interest in college basketball probably doesn't appeal to Duke, unless you were recruited (IMO)

Dam, this fool got waitlisted and I got rejected. What a waste of a spot, even a wait list spot.

couldn't agree more...but as the french would say it...c'est la vie

What percent of the waitlisted applicants are offered admission later on? I'm in the same pool and I'm still positive..

em190

Look back at your wait list letter. It has a clickable FAQ pdf file that talks about how wait listing works and about what has happened in the past. Bottom line is that it varies a lot from year to year. I haven't looked, but the info in this FAQ file is probably on duke's website somewhere, too. With the economy the way it is, I would think that the yield at Duke might be a little lower than previous years, leaving a few more spots for wait listed kids.

Arrogance.

It just seems to be bad luck, from what I'm hearing.
Depending on where I get in tomorrow (Harvard, Princeton, Yale), I'll probably not stay on Duke's wait-list.

No dude I think it's your arrogance.

^ I don't think so and I can tell you why.
First of all, I have a close friend who currently attends Duke.
From what I hear from him, a lot of the guys at Duke have very arrogant, I-have-it-all personalities. If for some reason, I presented such qualities via essays and interviews, how did they get in and I didn't?
I doubt all of them have 1600 SATs and I doubt all of them have "outstanding leadership achievements" or whatever it is Duke admissions claims to be looking for. Statistically, it is improbable.

Nevermind.

You won't get into HYP guaranteed with your attitude. Have fun failing at MIT.
