Just wondering how the day went for everyone.

“Wow”, is all I can say. I spoke with my daughter (who is away participating in her sport), and I have never heard her sound so exhausted - between competing/training all day, speaking on the phone with multiple coaches, plus addressing the follow-up emails from the coaches…I look forward to when she is more rested, and can enjoy this a bit!

In answer to your question, her day went really well - one excellent school, who she was sure had lost interest in her, and therefore she had stopped thinking of them, rang her and told her that she is one of their top recruits - great but bizarre due to the recent lack of communication in comparison to other schools on her list! She has a lot to consider. A bit overwhelming this very moment, I think. All amazingly good - I still can’t wait for this to end though!

fishymom: What were/are your thoughts on the day?

Congratulations!! And WOW is right! What a wild ride you guys are on. All I can say is hold on tight, hopefully it will all be over soon!

My daughter had a great day also. Psychologically, it was a huge boost for her to actually have coaches calling her. This is a new sport for her and she still harbors doubt that she is actually recruitable, so this was huge for her. She had half dozen phone calls and several more emails. Got great news on her early read from one of her top schools and spoke to the head coach from another one of her top schools. All in all, a very good day.

fishymom - Congratulations to you and your daughter! That is so great that it went so well for her, and the psychological boost is priceless - and every phone call is such a compliment I think, even if it is not a school that is on the “short list” - the meaning is the same Even better though to speak to the head coach from one of her top choices - that is the best! Also, what an awesome feeling to have the great feedback on the early read - that should only reinforce her feeling that yes, indeed, she is very recruitable, and has a lot to look forward to! So happy for her that her day went so well :)

Congrats on an exciting day, guys. Fishy, it won’t all be over soon, nor will you want it to be :-). For those who sat patiently by the phone all day and got nothing, don’t despair - coaches have a lot on their plates right now. Be patient and continue to put out feelers instead of passively waiting. Good luck all

Did you get calls from Div III schools?

fishymom and mayhew - great news that your July 1 went very well. I’m very happy for you and your daughters. Your recruiting roller coaster has officially started. Enjoy the highs, and prepare for the lows.

Mayhew - I love your comment that “you can’t wait for it to end”. I remember thinking “when is this going to end” last July. I know now that it doesn’t end nearly quickly enough for most folks. Sorry, but you have a while to go for either verbal committment, Likely Letter, NLI, Early Admission or Regular Admission depending on the schools you are looking at. The good news is your daughter may have all of this out of the way before Christmas while most seniors are just getting started. At this time next year, your daughter will choosing her roommate/dorm and class schedule. I learned that it goes by fast once it all comes together. Good luck!

fenway south: Thank you for your perspective - and I know you are right … gulp! I also really appreciate your line “Enjoy the highs, and prepare for the lows”. That is exactly what is ahead of us for the next few months, for sure…which is exactly why I can’t wait for this all to be resolved (hopefully happily!), and life can be calm again (at least, in my fantasy world where all is smooth and seamless…! ) It is people like you who are the biggest help to people like me who are in the midst of it all, yet still have so much to learn and experience. Again, thanks :)

fendrock: My daughter is only talking to Div. 1 schools, so no. Does the July 1st coach contact date apply to all Div. 1, 2, & 3? I don’t know much about that, but would be very interested to learn more about it.

Congrats to your student atheletes, Mayhew & Fishymom~ good stuff.

D-III coaches have no restrictions on phone calls. They may contact prospective recruits at any time.

Here’s a chart that sums it up by Division and by sport:

http://web1.ncaa.org/web_files/AMA/recruiting_calendars/2010/Overviewchart.pdf

July 1st was a funny day. Only had 3 calls - but every single caller interestingly said, “we’re sure you’re getting a lot of calls today…”. All were D1s, 2 of which I hadn’t spoken to previously at all. I guess I couldn’t have expected a lot of calls though given the circumstances. The two previous days I came from a showcase at which I talked a good deal to a bunch of coaches, and July 1st was the 1st day of another showcase at which a lot of the coaches I had talked to before were working. There wasn’t much to talk about to the coaches I had already talked to in person, and even if there was they were tied up running the showcase. Case in point - one coach on June 30th tells me in person that he wants to get me in for an official visit -> no call on July 1st. Sure there is great symbolism in getting a call but it doesn’t mean anything to not receive a call if it is from someone with which you’ve already had a significant deal of dialogue.

Hi Everyone, I have been reading CC but have not posted before.
My D has been emailing 5 schools so far. On July 1st 3 of them called, 1 is out of town and will call next week. Another one emailed her saying He did not have her phone number.
One school suggested her about doing early action app., 2 offered official visits.

She probably will do 3 visits and make the decision early to concentrate on other things.

Monster, same situation for lots of sports. Summer camps are in full swing and the coaches working the camps are busy. Coaches visiting camps will get to see athletes in person, much better than a phone call for sure. And with major summer competitions happening, much better for a coach to see you perform than talk to you on the phone! Good luck to all!

My S has received calls from D3 schools beginning on July 1. Even though the NCAA rules state that they could have been calling him all along, they all have said to him something like “Now that it’s July, I can call you.” Even his club coach told him that the two that called in the spring were breaking the rules and trying to cheat. Guess it’s better to be conservative (by following the D1 rules) than actually breaking the rules!

^^^ Wiggle do you mind saying what sport this is for? Thanks!

It’s for lacrosse.
