How did you find Barnard?

Just curious. My college counselor said I’d love it.

My D found it while doing a summer dance intensive during HS at NYU.

My daughter found it as we were looking for top schools in general. Barnard showed up as a top women’s college. She loves it there.

I’ve always known that I wanted to go to school in NYC. And on my first visit, i went to NYU, loved it, and thought that it was the school for me. But the next time I went to NY, my dad made us go see Columbia. Before visiting, I had started realizing that I wanted to interact in class, and have a personal relationship with professors, etc. While touring, I fell in love with the school, and changed my mind about NYU. But I felt that something was missing. After our tour we were about to go onto the subway at Broadway and 116th when my dad got a phone call. Since reception in the tunnels sucks, we had to wait around while he took the call. About ten minutes later, I was done people watching and started looking around. I found myself looking at a window that had some really cool curtains and nick nacks in the window. I looked at the building a little bit more, and I saw a plaque that said “Barnard College; the liberal arts college for women in NYC”. Curious, and interested, I googled it when we got back to the hotel. I had found the little thing that was missing from Columbia: Barnard.

naomiii, that’s touching.

Haha figureskater, my counselor’s never even heard of Barnard.

I found out about Barnard online… one someone’s blog or something, I think.

We found out about it through the guidance counselor at school. We found the facilities to be pretty worn and run down. Maybe it was just the places our tour went but it looked like it had seen better days. Still top choice

The older sister of one of my best friends goes, and she *loves *it. My guidance counselor said I’d hate it, but she has consistantly given me terrible advice so I don’t really care :).

Back in the day I was searching for a band and they showed up on the playlist of a show on wbar, Barnard’s radio station. I had no idea at the time what it was, but later when visiting Columbia it all came back to me.

Barnard’s facilities/buildings are old in the way that many university facilities (especially in NYC) are old. Many of the buildings were constructed between 1889 and the 1930s. However, over the past year they’ve done a lot of updating and repainting, etc. (the Brooks dorms got new paint and doors, for instance). Plus, we’ve got a new student center which just opened near the end of last year. I’d say the buildings are on par with if not better than (for their classic touches) those at most other universities.

@honied_dreams or anyone currently at Barnard:
why is the graduation rate low? I think I read that about 12% don’t end up graduating! also, I’ve read a lot on here about the difficulty of making friends at Barnard…what has your experience been?

thanks!

I am not sure why you quantify Barnard’s graduation rate as “low”. They are included in the latest USNWR list of colleges with the best four year graduation rates (Barnard’s 4 year rate is 84%). The 6 year graduation rate for Barnard is 89%, and I can imagine several reasons for taking longer than four years to graduate, including study abroad, job opportunities (D has a friend who was a Rockette and who also did the national tour of A Chorus Line, for example), etc. For comparison’s sake, the BEST four-year graduation rate listed in USNWR was 93% (one school); then 91%. Looking at these numbers, 89% is not that far off. And, of course, from that you get that 11% (not the 12% you quoted) do not, for what ever reason, graduate in 6 years.

I would imagine that a significant number of those 11% of students might not graduate because of finances. Barnard is not inexpensive! Just a guess on my part, though.

oh thanks for clarifying! I was doing a college match thing and when I clicked ‘it is important that I go to school where most students graduate’ and Barnard disappeared, but when I said it wasn’t important it stayed on the list, so I was a little worried, but nevermind! thank you!

That is very strange that they would use that indicator to erase it from your list. But thanks for posting because it made me look into those stats a bit more and put it into perspective.

My AP Bio teacher mentioned to the class a science program at a women’s college called Barnard. Me, being the science nerd, signed up and got accepted. After the first session they took the class on a tour and by the end of the tour I was sold. I knew that Barnard was the place for me.

I came across the song “B-tches ain’t s-hit” on youtube.

It was performed by Bacchantae, so I googled it & came to find out it was the
a capella group of Barnard.
