I get that no one knows what they want to major in when they enter college, but I want to know how others found their major so I at least have an idea as to what I’m looking for (I’d rather not fumble around in the dark.)
Are you already in college or still in high school? If you’re in college, there are workshops you can take that are specifically designed to help students decide on a major. Other than that, the following tips apply to both college and high school students.
What classes do you excel in? What classes do you enjoy? If there’s any overlap between your answers, then you should definitely focus on those. Also look at things you do outside of school too. Do you enjoy theater? Music? Animation?
While you can always change careers and even fields, I think it’s important to focus more on things you could do long term. As silly as it may sound, online quizzes can be a good way to get some ideas.
I have a rather clear idea what I want to major in despite not being in college. Inside go through multiple possibilities as I was younger and discussed them as I researched them and figured out what those jobs actually involved.
The easiest thing you can do is read, especially nonfiction books and autobiographies/biographies. You can spark some ideas and through self evaluation determine what you like. Because I know my intended major could change, I’ve got list of other things I’m interested in. Most of them are on the same trajectory so if I change my mind, there are related fields I can fall back on.
