I'm curious to see how everyone is preparing for or how everyone prepared for their college auditions for the top acting programs. Did you guys hire an audition coach? Work on the monologues by yourself, and get feedback from your teachers? What's your story?

I'm already in a well respected acting program and when I auditioned in my senior year in high school I did have a someone coach me for my auditions.
It would be interesting to see how other applicants prepare(d).

My D had two acting coaches and a vocal coach that we hired. (Well, the vocal coach she has had forever.) Some schools require 16 bars of a song, so the vocal coach worked on those.

She knew what monologues she wanted, and only needed help finding one. All told she had six ready. She has very obscure tastes, and that scored her points.

Be yourself - I know it sounds cliche but it is true… Do not try to be “perfect” be yourself because that is the most interesting thing you have to offer and I guarantee all these schools are interested in admitting interesting and intriguing people. They don’t want just the other perfect talented kid who walks in the door… There are plenty of those.

When auditioning…does the panel of judges look and have your grades with them in hand? or, does it just go straight to the admissions office for the school.

That will depend on the school… generally if the department wants to have your grades in hand at the audition they will ask you to send (or bring) a copy of your transcript and test scores. The transcripts and scores you send to the admissions office generally do not go to the department.
