I planning to apply CUNY community college, and my final plan is to transfer to Cornell university or nyu.
Is this plan possible?
Is it very difficult or nearly impossible?

I have seen it happen enough times that it is not impossible. It all depends upon how well you picked your CC courses to have a seamless transition to those schools, college gps and a good reason for going to the cede colleges. For NYU, a warning that funding is poor. How will you pay for it? Cornell seems to meet need for transfers.
Actually I want to study hospitality management in cc then transfer to Cornell SHA ( first preference ) or transfer to nyu hospitality management ( second option). Is it difficult to transfer to Cornell SHA? I really want to study in Cornell SHA
I want to study in cc for first two years is because I want to do more preparations in these two years…to be more competitive, also I can’t afford 4 years tuition, 2 years is ok to me
It can happen if you really excel at your CC BUT you always need to create a balanced application list that also includes match and safety schools. Do the research and come up with a list of colleges that are good in your area of study. Offhand, I know people who studied hospitality management at less selective schools such as Johnson and Wales as well as Fairleigh Dickinson who did well.
I heard Johnson and whales too. How about unlv ? I heard that it’s hospitality management school is quite famous, do you have anything about this school? Anyway, Cornell is still my first preference as it is much more prestigious:) I know…I know…I need to have some backup plans
Take a look at sample classes that the students in those programs at NYU and Cornell take. Your courses should be as close to theirs as possible.
Hi! Soon to be community college grad that’s heading to Georgetown but goto offers from many TOP 20 colleges. It is very possible!
My advice:
GPA: Aim for the highest you can, but GPA isn’t everything on an application, I had a 3.89
EC’S: This is important when transferring to top colleges, they want students who are involved and dedicated beyond the class. I start my own career centered club on campus, did a bunch of programs my college had and volunteered a lot outside. Look for things you really are interested in joining and then look at stuff you join that are career related. EC’s also help tie in your essays.
Essays: KEY! Highlight reasons for going beyond generic ones like major and etc. Do research on the school, look up professor you really wanna be taught by, classes you wanna take, program connections they have, clubs you wanna join etc. Make it super personal and state 3 strong reasons on why cornell and nyu.
LOR: build strong relationships with at least 4 professors, could be any subject, it really does not matter. The most important part is that the professors like you, know you and are going to write strong letters for you.
also classes aka transfer credits should be the least of your worries. If you are low income as most CUNY students are, around 85%, they will give you a very good aid package especially cornell. Focus on doing general ed and good grades.
NYU also has a program call CCTOP which is only for community college students who want to transfer there. They offer full rides and great support too so ask if your college participates in that program.
Does the CCTOP of nyu include hospitality management? It seems to be not suitable for all faculties in nyu.
@MPCH0822 I’m pretty sure they cover all the colleges and your majors. You can look it up
The advisor for hospitality students at your CUNY CC should know what you need to do for transfer to Cornell. I expect that many of that CC’s hospitality students appky for transfer there every year.
Is CUNY/SUNY CC more advantageous compare to other CC from different states for transferring to Cornell?
I do not know the details of transferring into the SHA. You will need to ask your department and the transfer advisor at your CC about that. I do know that CALS and HUMEC admit many transfers every year from CUNY/SUNY CCs.
@MPCH0822 I don’t think so and also I think you shouldn’t worry about that at all. Just follow the tips I gave you and you should be in good standing
