Second my thanks for the insight. My daughter also interviewed at the BU Hosp School and, according to my husband, totally blew her interview. I will show her your comments (edited, of course). She said that if she got into Cornell she would go there over BU although BU has a mandatory international internship and according to our tour guide last fall, it's tough for the Cornell Hotel people to go overseas.

Also, Appleapple, thanks for the link in post #16--that was exactly what I was looking for!

Kathyc...my daughter is also interested in BU for hospitality. Do they have a formal interview, or was is just a meeting with the dean? We are visiting in July, and I thought the meeting was relatively informal and not evaluative. How do you feel she "blew" it? Good luck with your daughter!

JustAMom, I sent you a PM regarding this. Make sure you clarify what the expectations are by the school.

Cornell is at least one of the best or most renown hospitality program in the world, when you say cornell hotel school, all the major industry know that it has an established name. For example,
http://www.hotelschool.cornell.edu/students/career/interviewing/companies-05-06.pdf

This is the list of all the companies that came to cornell hotel school trying to recruit hotelies, I think that's pretty impressive.

I know Purdue has a hospitality program but I dont know much about it... I know the one in UNLV is pretty good.

Okay since we are on the topic Im going to give a few pointers that will help admission chances. Admission is decided by professors and faculty...not just by the admission staff. Basically, your application and profilio is uploaded onto a server where everyone looks at your stat. From there, the professors can vote yes or no and they tally it up in the end. [Thats what my interviewer told me at least] There, they will also see the notes on the interview...one of the first things they see.

So to get a sucessful interview
1. Dress for sucess. As chessy as this sounds I saw people dressed up in ugg boots and miniskirts. I know Ithaca is cold in the winter but dressing in a nice suit for one day is worth it for your future for the next 4 years.

Bring a RESUME!!! Bring a professional resume...good use of microsoft words will give u kodos.

Don't BS your answers, the interviewers are not stupid....just be yourself.

Simple stuff like be on time, good handshake and etc.

Remember, if you don't get accepted, there are plenty of other schools out there that could be for you. Don't get discouraged. You cant control what decision will come in your mail in dec/april...but you can control how you react and what you make of college.

Good luck, if you guys have any questions about cornell or the hotel school at cornell, feel free to pm me. I remember what it is like to be a senior and stressed out about life and school. I'll be glad to help

thanks appleapple. =]

Re Comment #21- My d just returned from semester abroad in Italy. Though she is in the ILR school, she said a number of Hotel kids were in her program in Florence. (not Internship but Study Abroad Program)

Marny1, thanks for the clarification about going overseas while in the Hotel program. Maybe we misunderstood what our tour guide was saying. When I printed out the admissions stats from #16 above, it mentioned that approx 50 Hotel Jrs. each year do study abroad (which computes to approx 25% of each class).

Password - it is very difficult to find recent Hotel School Rankings. My research indicates that the following are the 'top' schools - in no particular order - Cornell, UNLV, Purdue, Florida State, Penn State, Michigan State, university of Houston, Wash. State, UWisconsin (Stout), University of Denver, Virginia Tech, University of Delaware, Cal state Polytechnic Pomona. Interestingly there all almost all state schools except cornell and University of Denver.

If others have a different list please share!

I constantly hear Cornell is absolutely #1 so it's safe to say that it is...

I hear the top hotel schools are:
Cornell
Purdue
UNLV
Michigan State
FSU

Does anyone know how Boston University's School of Hospitality Administration compares with the ones mentioned here?

I believe that BU's School of Hospitality is new. That makes it not totally equivalent with Cornell's reputed Statler school. However, if your daughter/son has the grades then he/she should apply to both with NYU also. if your looking for a prestigeous school. however, UNLV has great internship/job opportunities due to all the casino/hotels there. purdue has a great hotel program also.

Is NYU's hospitality program any good? Cause I heard rumors that it was...but nobody ever mentions it? Thanks.

NYU's hotel school is new too I heard... However.. I never heard of it being a TOP hotel school.. The name of NYU will land you hopefully in a decent hotel after graduation? NYU is mainly stern, tisch film... blah

NYU's program sounds good on the SCPS web site, but I get the feeling that it is very small. When my husband checked into the Grand Hyatt on 42nd street a little after midnight last January, the girl behind the desk was a recent NYU Hospitality graduate.

is kendall college good for hotel school? is it really hard to go internationally to les roches? im really interested in the hospitality business, but i am really confused about alot about the college process..advice would be GREATLY appreciated.thank you.

never heard of kendall college... i want to go to les roches too but I'm not too sure of the admissions there.

I was deleting old emails a few days ago and I came across this. http://instruct.sha.cornell.edu/services/instructional/rankings/ There it's now safe to say that cornell is almost consistently ranked #1 in the country. But then again, we all know ranking is worthless. If you are incompetent, you will be that way anywhere.

amazing how a girl that works at a very nice hotel at hyatt in nyc is a recent nyu grad. and is just a front desk. not even a manager or supervisor..
