How do Canadian students pay for Grad School in the US???

Hello everyone,

I’m a Canadian and I just graduated with my BA from a US college. I am looking at PhD programs (Clinical Psych) in America. I am financially depleted after my BA and the dreaded reality of not being able to afford Grad School is slowly dawning on me.

I was wondering if anyone can offer advice. Has anyone ever been in this situation before?

I’ll add for kicks - when I was struggling to make payments in my last semester of my BA and I asked my undergraduates financial aid department if I was able to get a loan or apply for any scholarships, they told me (on two occasions) that I should “play the lottery”. They were dead serious.

Thanks!

As you should have gleaned as an undergrad most such Ph.D. programs offer at least partial if not full funding to doctoral students: tuition waiver and a stipend, in return for being an RA or TA.

You should not go to a full-time Ph.D. program which does not offer you a significant financial support in the form of tuition remission/waiver/scholarship and stipend for work as a TA or RA. There are part-time programs for those who are working already but that is another matter altogether.

What xraymancs said, but I will add: don’t do a part-time PhD in clinical psychology. There aren’t very many of them at all, and the ones that do exist aren’t good quality programs.

But yeah, if you want a PhD in clinical psychology most good programs are fully funded. Your tuition is covered, your health insurance covered, and you’ll receive a stipend that ranges from about $20K to $30K USD a year.

Great, thank you for the info!
