how do colleges check volunteering?

I got many certificates from volunteering(in various places) and they add up to 195 hours. Do I just write that on my app and do colleges check it?

And it seems like anyone can just put a given number, and colleges are unable to check if he/she actually did it or not. How does that work?

Thanks

colleges don’t check your ECs. if it’s something big like a regional or national award they might, but otherwise, you’re correct, pretty much anyone can put down a number. it’s not a very good system.

They don’t, because they don’t care about how many hours you have. The Common App doesn’t even ask about hours (at least not in those terms).
IMO, the only ECs they would be inclined to check are non-typical high school activities/awards that are very impressive and sound made-up.

any example of ones that they’d check? I’m not saying I will cheat; I was just wondering which ones look REALLY GOOD, but not made up(maybe I can participate in that).

Intel finalist?

IMO/IBO/IChO/IPhO/IOI medallist would likely get checked.

My volunteering hours will be on my transcript, that’s how they will know about mine.

Cept they are trained BS spotters / know people lie.
