I plan on going to Michigan State. MSU is a pretty good school, but not that great. I know UofM is supposed to have a great engineering school. If I wanted to transfer from MSU to UofM for grad school. How much would it hurt my chances compared to people who transfer from Harvard, ect.

I graduated from MSU (math major) but know several MSU engineering grads who went to U-of-M for grad school. From what I have heard and seen, getting in U-of-M grad program can be from several paths:

1) Right out of undergrad with no experience -with the high GPA, GRE, etc.

2) After a few years of job experience - with a good (not high) GPA, GRE, etc.

3) Job experience + non-degree courses to prove admission

4) Attend UM-Flint or UM-Dearborn grad programs (which the GPA required is not so high), ace those classes then finish at UM-Ann Arbor.

If you do great work in any respectable engineering program you have a good chance of getting into good grad schools. The opportunities you have at MSU will be more than enough if you take advantage of them.

Um, Harvard doesn't exactly have a top Engineering school...
