I am about to ask my teachers for letters of recommendation in the next week. But how do I ask my counselor? Since she is required to write one for each student, I find it a bit awkward to ask if she "would be willing to write me a good recommendation letter that can help me get into my top schools."

It’s understood at my school that counselors write recs for all of their students. If that’s the same at your school, and you want to make sure you’re on the same page etc., then just tell her that you’d like to talk about your rec letter.

At my school, the counselors interview you to get a better idea about your personality and study habits. Maybe if you go to her and ask her straightforwardly, she’d be more than happy to write you one :)

once counselors get into a “rec. writing mood”, they send them out like clockwork.
Last year, I unknowingly went to my counselor during College admissions time for my Eagle Scout letter and I got it in 10 days.

Ask her when she’s free, then offer to go over the form with her so she can answer the questions well even if she doesn’t know you. A college counselor at my school said it wouldn’t be a bad idea to bring a list of the classes you’re taking and your ECs. Give her your email or something and let her know that she can contact you if she has other questions.
