How do I deal with the excessive smoking in my dorm building?

Hi, all.

I'm a freshman in college, and I live in regular dorm housing. Someone on my side of the hallway is smoking a LOT (I have a strong suspicion that it is our SA). During the week the hallway kind of smells, but it gets way worse during the weekend, to the point that I can't even have my door open - and even with it closed, I can still smell the smoke sometimes. It really bothers me. I don't know what I should do about it. We don't really know our SAs all that well because we had to get new ones, so I don't really feel very comfortable talking to my SA about it. At the same time, I don't want to go straight to the RLC or any higher to deal with this issue since we believe in dealing with this sort of thing ourselves. Technically, this is supposed to be a smoke-free campus, with smoking only being allowed on the public sidewalks and in the streets (college policy/state law). I don't really care if people smoke in their rooms, but I do have a problem with them making the whole hall - and the rooms of others - smell.

What should I do?

Thanks,

Go to your “SA” (whatever that is). If that doesn’t fix it, go above him/her.

If this is smoking cigarettes, it provides a huge health risk to people (like me) that are severely asthmatic/allergic to cigarette smoke. Plus, 2nd hand smoke in general is terrible even if you don’t have allergies/asthma.

Go to them. This is what they’re there for.

Looks like you ruled out the obvious actions:

Report to the SA.

If no resolution, report to RLC.

But how do I broach the subject with the SA (they’re kind of like RAs, btw), especially since I’m pretty sure it’s her? It’d be different if I was talking to the SA about someone different.

Just tell her that you can’t stand the smell and that it pose a health risk. I mean I know it’s winter but really if people were smoking on my floor everyday I’d dealt with it. Don’t assume anything just tell her.
Or you can always go above her and go whatever the Residence/dorm office is.
