How do I explain why I had to leave my original school?

I had to leave Caltech because I was depressed and the administration did not want me killing myself on campus. Now I am looking to transfer to schools of similar quality. I have a good GPA from Caltech and awesome stats from high school. But I had to take a year off in the middle of my freshman year (during which I took graduate level classes at a state school). And right now I'm not in any school at all.

How do I explain the gaps in my education? And what am I supposed to list as my reason for transferring?

Thanks, guys.

You had personal problems. Just recount them in a short little note/essay and describe how the experience affected you. If you did really well there shouldn’t be a problem. Although what was it in the first place that messed you up? This is more of a rhetorical q, b/c you don’t want to really be putting yourself in a similar situation if you don’t understand what happened (but I’m assuming you do).

Wow, do you really think they won’t hold it against me that I’m crazy? If so that’s awesome.

I think CalTech has a little bit of that reputation already haha

I think if you can explain how you’ve learned to treat your depression and how you’ve grown as a person, then you’ll be fine.

You guys act like he said he has treated his depression. Are you sure you’re ready to go back to school? If this is not the case, and since you still say that you’re “crazy,” you should probably get mental help first before trying to go to another school (or just take a break I guess, because school can be very stressful).

al6200 is completely right.
