I have a question regarding the FASFA because of my conditions

Mom doesn't have a job and hasn't had one for a while. My grandmother and her boyfriend supports us

My mother receives child support from my father (they were never married)

My mother does not file taxes nor does she have a W-2 form due to having no employment

I can't put my grandmother on my fasfa form as it doesn't allow me but she has me as her dependent on her own taxes

How would I go about this? I hear that for verification of the FASFA form colleges ask for W-2 and a Tax refund form.. so what do I do?

Thanks for this. However, I also have another question.

This year I got money from a paid internship and I need to file taxes on it

Will this turn me into an “independent” as I’m not claim on my moms taxes as she doesn’t do them

In of this does that mean I should put myself as independent on my fasfa? The internship was only around 900$ but it’s requiring me to file taxes for it.

If she will not file taxes this year there is a box there and you click will not file. There is a section there for how much child support she receives, put in the amount. Your grandmother is not your custodial parent nor does she claim you on her taxes so her information is not necessary. Don’t worry fill it out as best as you can. You will be typing in a lot of 0’s. You can private message me if you like. I work in the accounting field.

You can fill out a 1040ez if you need to get back taxes you had withheld, or if you earned over $6100. If you didn’t, you don’t have to fill. Don’t claim yourself as an exemption if your grandmother claims you.

If you only made $900 that tax withheld seems high unless you made it in a very short period of time. Are you sure you are looking at box 2 for federal tax and box 16 for state?

Yes. The state income tax box (17) is 71.55. The federal income tax withheld is 135.14$. This was over a short period of time, (within 2 months)

If your mother is not required to file a tax return, she does not have to file one. You simply put “will not file” as her filing status, list 0 as income (if she really does not earn any money), and list the child support she receives in “child support received.”

Twinmom2014 stated that your grandmother doesn’t claim you on her taxes, but you said the grandmother does. Make sure she knows that if she is giving you private advice.
